This Might Help You Delay Your Tropical Vacation

A favorite part of travel for many is the delicious and healthy food that is easy to find in tropical places, but harder to find in the colder parts of the world. With the Covid-19 pandemic, it’s just one more thing we miss and want to return to normal. Newly available in the United States is tropical-fruit-filled Evive smoothie cubes — which might transport your taste buds away and help you patiently focus on travel planning while you’re waiting for the green light to to travel again.

Inspired by travel

Covid-19 has postponed pre-pandemic treats like sampling the fruit markets of Lima, Peru and getting a fresh fruit smoothie made to your specifications on the streets of Chang Mai, Thailand (ideally by Mrs. Pa, whose orange cart is at the old city’s South Gate). Evive Nutrition’s blender-free smoothies won’t transport you there, but will help make planning your post-pandemic travels a little more delicious.

Evive was created by Canadians Dominic Dubé and Claudia Poulin, with the goal of making healthy eating more accessible with their nutritious and convenient products. It’s no surprise that Dubé’s and Poulin’ travels inspired Evive, given smoothie names like Aztec, Samurai, and Viva and travel-evoking ingredients like acai berries, baobab, chai spices, dragon fruit, and goji berries.

“Over the years, we’ve tried to incorporate ingredients to our recipes from the different countries we’ve travelled to,” says Poulin. That includes Australia, Guatemala, as well as the islands of Hawaii. Drinking a smoothie, she says, “gives us a feeling of being transported to different destinations without leaving the kitchen.” Sounds like what everyone needs right about now.

Evive’s Touk-Touk smoothie — featuring pineapple, coconut, turmeric, and sea buckthorn — was inspired by travels to Central America. ”During our trip to Guatemala, Dominic and I were charmed by the country’s culture, its people and … their famous touk-touks,” says Poulin.

The Passion-Mango smoothie was developed when Poulin was on a trip in Australia, where passionfruit is easy to find in products from grocery store yogurt to shop-made smoothies. This sun-colored smoothie tastes of the tropics and contains passionfruit, banana, non-GMO soy protein, date, carrot, mango, pumpkin seeds, lemon juice, chia protein, baobab, natural vanilla flavor, dehydrated pumpkin, and sea salt — almost all organic.

Good-for-you ingredients

Evive’s smoothies are both delicious and good for you. They’re made with antioxidants, organic fruits and vegetables, and plant-based protein. There’s no added sugar, artificial flavors, or preservatives, and the smoothies are gluten-free, non-GMO, and vegan.

Evive currently has 14 smoothie flavors, as well as — only in Canada for now — lunches that can be served as a soup or over rice, quinoa, or pasta. The smoothies come in wheels of jewel-like triangular “cubes” that you can store easily in the freezer and take out whenever you want some tropical fruit goodness. Four triangle-shaped smoothie cubes are perfect for a snack and the whole eight-pack wheel equals breakfast.

The smoothie cubes are designed to be quick and easy. Pop them into a lidded cup, let them thaw for several minutes, and then shake them up for 30 seconds with the liquid of your choice, from water to juice to cashew milk. You can drink them or, with an added banana, make them into a breakfast bowl sprinkled with granola and more fruit.

Lockdown-easy: Get Evive delivered to you

You can buy Evive’s blender-free smoothies in Canada and the U.S., both at stores and delivered to your house, including via subscription service. The smoothie packs arrive frozen in a box with dry ice and a hemp liner and can be stored in your freezer for up to one year.

Evive plants a tree for every purchase of a box of 24 or 36 smoothies and aims for carbon-neutral certification by 2023. There’s no polystyrene in their shipments — instead, containers are made from salvaged water bottles and even the hemp liner is compostable.

Evive now, travel later
