New storm system to travel across South this weekend

After a relatively quiet Thanksgiving across much of the U.S., the weather pattern is about to turn quite turbulent over the coming days.

A storm system is going to develop this weekend and track across the southern and eastern U.S., possibly creating multiple hazards, including heavy rain, strong thunderstorms, damaging winds and some snow.

The first impacts of the storm are expected on Friday, with areas of heavy rain affecting parts of the western Gulf Coast, from Texas into southern Louisiana. This is forecast to continue for 24 hours.

On Saturday, the storm will start to get more organized with heavy rain, moving onshore to southern Texas and New Orleans, where localized flooding is possible.

On Sunday, the storm will be moving through the northern Gulf Coast, and heavy rain will spread over much of the South, from Louisiana to Florida. It will then push north, across several southeastern states, bringing heavy rain and the potential for flash flooding.

On Monday, as the storm travels up the eastern U.S., it will be invigorated by a shot of cold air coming in across the Midwest.

On Monday, as the storm travels up the eastern U.S., it will be invigorated by a cold shot of air coming in from the Midwest and the storm will strengthen somewhere over the Appalachians.

The result on the milder eastern side of the storm will be widespread, with very heavy rainfall likely in the mid-Atlantic. Additionally, some very strong winds will have the potential to mix down from aloft, especially across New England, which could result in some potential for damaging wind gusts, including power outages.

On the colder side of the storm, snow likely will be falling, somewhere from Ohio into Michigan. It’s too early to determine the precise location of the heaviest snow.

The main global forecast models are indicating that the storm will be a little slow to move out of the region as it moves into southern Canada on Tuesday and Wednesday, but the storm should weaken during this time period.

The storm should help pull a shot of cold air across much of the central and eastern U.S., with wind chills in the teens expected from Minnesota possibly into parts of Tennessee, Texas and Georgia by Tuesday morning.

The most notable part of this cold blast is how far south the cold air will reach — it’s looking like parts of northern Florida will be seeing low 30s on Tuesday morning.

New storm system to travel across the South this weekend

It could bring heavy rain, strong thunderstorms, damaging winds and some snow.

After a relatively quiet Thanksgiving across much of the U.S., the weather pattern is about to turn quite turbulent in the coming days.

A new storm system is going to develop this weekend and track across the Southern and Eastern U.S. bringing multiple hazards, including heavy rain, strong thunderstorms, damaging winds and some snow.

The first impacts of the storm will be today with some strong thunderstorms forming near Southeast Texas.

On Saturday, the storm will start to get more organized with heavy rain moving onshore to Southern Texas and New Orleans where localized flooding will be possible.

On Sunday, the storm will be moving through the Gulf States and heavy rain will spread over much of the South from Louisiana to the Carolinas.

One again localized flooding and some occasional strong thunderstorms with gusty winds will be possible, especially from New Orleans to Raleigh.

On Monday, as the storm travels up the eastern U.S., it will be invigorated by a cold shot of air coming in from the Midwest and the storm will strengthen somewhere over the Appalachians.

The result on the milder eastern side of the storm will be widespread with very heavy rainfall. Additionally, some very strong winds will have the potential to mix down from aloft, especially across New England which could result in some potential for damaging wind gusts, including power outages.

On the colder side of the storm, precipitation will be falling as snow in parts of Ohio and with the heaviest snow likely to be near the Great Lakes.

It remains too early to determine the precise location of the heaviest snow because it will be determined by the precise location of the strengthening storm.

The main global forecast models are indicating that the storm will be a little slow to move out of the region as it moves into southern Canada on Tuesday and Wednesday but the good news is, that the storm should weaken during this time period.

The storm will help pull a shot of cold air across much of the central and eastern U.S. with wind chills in the teens expected from Minnesota possibly into parts of Alabama and Georgia by Tuesday morning.

The most notable part of this cold blast is how far south the cold air will reach and it looks like even parts of northern Florida will be feeling like the low 30s on Tuesday morning.

Norris Area Trail System Taking Recreation Tourism to the Next Level by Unveiling Plans for Multi-Use Recreational Trail System

KNOXVILLE, Tenn., Nov. 21, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — The Norris Project Steering Committee is launching a plan to improve connectivity between four park systems to create a more extensive multi-use recreational trail system. The NATS steering committee consists of local officials and the respective property managers for Loyston Point, Big Ridge State Park, Norris Watershed Trails, and Norris Dam State Park. The recently completed Norris Area Trail Sustainability (NATS) and Connectivity Feasibility Plan propose building a system of non-motorized multi-use trails to attract more year-round visitors by expanding recreational options.

In an area that’s long suffered from tepid economic vitality, enhancing visitors’ experiences could catalyze raising the region’s recreation profile and, in turn, boost local businesses and increase demand for workers. This improvement will sustain local tourism during the winter months by leveraging existing NATS recreational assets to balance the large number of tourists who visit Norris Lake in the summer.

Chuck Morris, a local biking enthusiast who often volunteers to help build and maintain area trails, is excited about the NATS plan. He believes that if improved and energetically promoted, NATS could compete as planned with the booming summertime water activity.

“It’s hard to get somebody to come here for a single trail system, but if you can market it as multiple trail systems that are interconnected, then when you have people come stay on a houseboat for a week, they will want to bring their bikes out to ride, too. Then you will have more people coming in the summer and riding, but also coming back in the winter and bringing business to your hotels, your cabins, your marinas, and restaurants.”

“The bigger picture of the Norris Area Trail System is not only to get more people to enjoy our parks but to discover our area and draw more attention to it,” said Norris Lake State Park manager Veronica Grear. “All of us want to bring more people to our parks — and have them spend their money locally. The whole vision of the NATS plan is to promote parks and connect more people to the parks so that we can have future generations of park supporters and advocates who’re going to protect the land and enjoy it after we’re not here anymore.”

“What is unique about this system of trails is that each land manager will retain autonomy for their property, but is committed to collaborating to boost the tourism opportunities for these rural counties that border Norris Lake,” says Julie Graham, spokesperson for ExploreTRV. “The TVA came to this Valley in 1930 to create not only the dam but to build places for people to enjoy outdoor recreation. The TVA’s investment in funding the feasibility plan helped us create this vision. We appreciate the support from the Anderson, Campbell, and Union County mayors and commissions in supporting the realization of the vision.”

The Tennessee River Valley Stewardship Council serves as the steering committee and editorial board for the Geotourism

Texas A&M University System Board Of Regents Approves South Campus Recreation Center Project

exterior rendering of rec center

Construction on the South Campus Recreation Center could start as early as December.

Texas A&M Division of Student Affairs

The Texas A&M University System Board of Regents today authorized the construction of a $35 million South Campus Recreation Center to enhance student recreational activities.

The 63,000 square-foot facility will have strength and conditioning areas, areas for basketball, volleyball and indoor soccer, a climbing wall, locker rooms and more. It will be located off Bizzell Street across from Krueger, Mosher and Rudder Halls and adjacent to the golf course.

“In recent years, Texas A&M has invested heavily in several facilities designed to enhance the educational experience,” said Texas A&M President Michael K. Young. “With this new recreation center, we’re supporting our students’ health and well-being, which are essential to helping them succeed not only in the classroom, but also in life.”

Rick Hall, director of Recreational Sports, part of the Division of Student Affairs, said the South Campus Rec Center project will advance the university by preparing students to assume roles in leadership, responsibility and service to society.

“The South Campus Recreation Center is a critical project to the university’s commitment to provide students, faculty and staff with the best opportunities to support and nurture their health and well-being,” Hall said. “The Department of Recreational Sports provides high-quality, inclusive experiences and facilities. Multiple assessments have shown that participants in recreational activities have higher persistence rates and graduation rates than those who do not engage in recreation. A student’s overall health and well-being, coupled with academic success, will prepare graduates for successful careers within the global economy.”

Texas A&M administrators said the facility is needed because of the school’s increasing enrollment. A study by the National Intramural Recreational Sports Association shows that a university the size of Texas A&M should have at least 587,000 square feet of indoor recreational facilities, and that the school currently has about 415,000 square feet.

Since the main Student Recreation Center opened in 1995, the Texas A&M student body has grown more than 60 percent while recreational facilities have increased by only 25 percent.

In addition, Texas A&M administrators said, all current student recreational facilities are located west of the train tracks that divide the campus and are beyond a 10-minute walk from much of the academic and housing facilities on campus.

Construction on the South Campus Recreation Center project could start as early as December, and is scheduled for completion in June of 2022.

First passengers travel in Virgin’s levitating hyperloop pod system | Hyperloop

Richard Branson’s Virgin Hyperloop has completed the world’s first passenger ride on a super high-speed levitating pod system, a key safety test for technology it hopes will transform human and cargo transportation.

Virgin Hyperloop executives Josh Giegel, its chief technology officer, and Sara Luchian, the director of passenger experience, reached speeds of up to 107mph (172 km/h) at the company’s DevLoop test site in Las Vegas, Nevada, the company said on Sunday.

“I had the true pleasure of seeing history made before my very eyes,” said Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem, the chairman of Virgin Hyperloop and the group chairman and chief executive of DP World.

Los Angeles-based Hyperloop envisions a future where floating pods packed with passengers and cargo hurtle through vacuum tubes at 600mph (966 km/h) or faster.

Virgin Hyperloop executives Josh Giegel and Sara Luchian reached speeds of up to 107 miles per hour (172km/h).

In a hyperloop system, which uses magnetic levitation to allow near-silent travel, a trip between New York and Washington would take just 30 minutes. That would be twice as fast as a commercial jet flight and four times faster than a high-speed train.

The company has already run more than 400 tests without human passengers at the Nevada site.

The test comes a month after Reuters first reported that Virgin Hyperloop picked the US state of West Virginia to host a $500m certification centre and test track that will serve as a proving ground for its technology.

The company is working towards safety certification by 2025 and commercial operations by 2030, it has said.

Canada’s Transpod and Spain’s Zeleros also aim to upend traditional passenger and freight networks with similar technology they say will slash travel times, congestion and environmental harm linked with petroleum-fuelled machines.

Ireland to phase in EU ‘traffic light’ travel system from Sunday

DUBLIN, Nov 4 (Reuters) – Ireland will start implementing the European Union’s “traffic light” system for non-essential EU travellers such as tourists from Nov. 8, easing some of the bloc’s tightest restrictions, Tourist Minister Eamon Ryan said on Wednesday.

Ireland began allowing quarantine-free access in July from European countries with relatively low numbers of COVID-19 cases, a measure that opened up travel with 15 countries for a short period, although that has fallen to zero in recent weeks as infections across the region rise again.

In line with EU guideline, the so-called “green list” will remain but those arriving from regions designated as “orange” — currently a handful of EU countries — will not need to restrict their movements if they produce a negative Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) result from a test taken up to three days before arrival

The requirement for “red” country arrivals to quarantine for 14 days remains, but the government plans that “within a short number of weeks” this too can be waived following a negative test result taken five days after arrival, Ryan said.

Children under six will be exempt and arrivals will have to pay for their own test, Ryan said, adding that its adaptation of the EU system was similar to Germany and the United Kingdom.

EU nations have been encouraged to apply “proportionate” measures for medium-risk orange and high-risk red zones, such as a quarantine or a test rather than a blanket bar on entry.

A green status under the EU model applies to regions with fewer than 25 cases per 100,000 people in 14 days and where the percentage of positive tests is below 4%. Red means infection rates of 50 or more and positive tests of 4% or higher or infection rates of over 150 even with a low positive test rate.

Ireland’s two main airlines, Ryanair and Aer Lingus , have called on government to apply the EU system. Ryanair will stop serving four of its five Irish airports for four weeks from Nov. 14, it said last week, blaming the existing restrictions.

Otsego County, MI (WNEM) — Three people have been arrested, accused of vandalizing properties in Otsego County.

Michigan State Police responded to someone’s vacation property on Henry Drive in Otsego County’s Bagley Township on April 20 after the homeowner’s surveillance system alerted them that someone was on their property.

Troopers found the home’s garage door had been vandalized using spray pain. Several surrounding properties on Beachwood had also been vandalized, along with two vehicles, MSP reports. The total damage was placed at just under $8,000.

A lengthy investigation led to the arrest of two adults, and one juvenile.

Derue was arraigned on two counts Accessory After the Fact to a Felony (MDOP) and one count Harboring Felons.

Birchfield was arraigned on one count Malicious Destruction of Personal Property greater than $999 but less than $20,000, and one count Malicious Destruction of Building greater than $999 but less than $20,000.

The 15-year-old juvenile will also face charges in the incident.
