Sunday saw the most travelers pass through US airports since the pandemic began as Americans bucked CDC warnings against Thanksgiving travel

  • Over 1.1 million travelers flew on Sunday, breaking a record for pandemic travel for daily passengers not seen since March.
  • Thanksgiving was largely successful in getting more flyers in the air as over 15 million passengers flew between November 19 and November 29, according to the Transportation Security Administration.
  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warned against Thanksgiving travel but over a third of Americans told Insider that the guidance didn’t change their plans.

The Transportation Security Administration is reporting that a record-breaking 1,176,091 passengers traveled by air on Sunday, likely returning home after the Thanksgiving holiday. It’s the first time since March 16 that daily traffic numbers have been that high.

Thanksgiving encouraged more people to fly following a lackluster summer for airlines, TSA statistics show. The days leading up to the family-oriented holiday that typically draws scores of flyers to the skies similarly saw passenger numbers exceed one million.

From November 19 to November 29, nine days saw over 900,000 passengers, four of which saw over one million passengers for a total of 10,381,904 passengers. The same period in 2019 saw 25,898,477 passengers.

It took airlines seven months to get back to one million passengers in a single day with October 18 seeing 1,031,505 flyers pass through security checkpoints at US airports. The day quickly proved to be an outlier, however, as it took another month and a popular travel holiday for the daily passenger count to rise back to similar levels.

The influx of passengers comes as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warned against non-essential travel. Large gatherings allow for the virus to spread from person to person, especially when attendees are in close proximity, such as around the dinner table.

An Insider poll of 1,110 Americans found that over one-third didn’t plan on changing their holiday plans, despite CDC warnings, and the increase in traveler numbers around the holiday clearly reflects that.

The Thanksgiving holiday itself didn’t see as many travelers with only 560,902 flyers. That’s to be expected, however, as most holiday-goers typically fly on the days leading up to and following the holiday itself.

The next busy holiday travel rush will surround the Christmas and New Year’s holidays. This time, however, planes will be more crowded as Southwest Airlines and JetBlue Airways are filling their aircraft at higher levels than during the Thanksgiving travel period.

Southwest Airlines will allow its planes to be filled to capacity on December 1. The low-cost carrier had blocked seats over the summer, as Business Insider found on two June flights on the airline, but announced an end to the policy in October citing new Harvard University and US Department of Defense studies

Hotel association urging lawmakers to pass coronavirus relief before next Congress sworn in

The American Hotel & Lodging Association is urging federal lawmakers to pass new coronavirus relief before the next Congress takes over because of the group’s fear that Americans will not travel for the upcoming holiday season.

AHLA said a survey it commissioned by Morning Consult found that 72% of Americans are unlikely to travel for this month’s Thanksgiving holiday and 69% of respondents said they are unlikely to travel for the Christmas holiday in December.

“Fewer people will be traveling, and business travel remains nearly non-existent. That’s why it’s so important for Congress to pass a relief bill now,” Chip Rogers, AHLA president and CEO, said in a statement. “Millions of Americans are out of work, and thousands of small businesses are struggling to keep their doors open. We cannot afford to wait until the next Congress is sworn in for relief. They need help now.”

While promising news about coronavirus vaccine candidates have emerged in recent days, the long-term outlook for the hospitality industry remains dire. The Morning Consult survey for AHLA found 44% of respondents either have no plans to stay in a hotel or their next hotel stay for vacation travel is more than a year away.

Morning Consult’s poll surveyed 2,200 adults from Nov. 2-4 online with a plus or minus margin of error of 2 percentage points. AHLA bills itself as the only national association representing all segments of the lodging industry and has existed for more than 100 years, according to its website.

Army Corps of Engineers extends America the Beautiful Military Recreation Pass benefits to veterans and Gold Star families

Army Corps of Engineers extends America the Beautiful Military Recreation Pass benefits to veterans and Gold Star families

PR Newswire

WASHINGTON, Nov. 10, 2020

WASHINGTON, Nov. 10, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced today it will expand eligibility for benefits under the America the Beautiful Military Annual Recreation Pass.

Beginning Veterans Day, Nov. 11, 2020, all U.S. military veterans and Gold Star family members will be eligible to enter USACE-managed recreation areas free of charge where a day use recreation fee applies. This benefit does not apply to camping and camping-related services, or fees for specialized facilities (group picnic shelters) and events. Some facilities and activities on federal recreation lands are managed by private concessionaires whose services would not be covered by this benefit.

To receive benefits, veterans must demonstrate proof of their status by presenting a valid veteran identification card. Gold Star Family members are asked to visit the following website, https://www.nps.gov/planyourvisit/veterans-and-gold-star-families-free-access.htm, where documentation of Gold Star status can be obtained and printed. This documentation can then be presented to gain free access to USACE-managed recreation areas that charge a fee. This temporary expansion of benefits is in effect until rescinded or amended.

“Today, I directed the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to implement the Interagency Pass Program at USACE-managed recreation areas to include veterans and Gold Star Families. As a component of the Department of Defense, we fully support the decision to expand free access under the Pass in this manner to support our military families so they can enjoy the many benefits of USACE recreation areas,” said The Honorable R. D. James, Assistant Secretary of the Army for Civil Works.

The America the Beautiful Military Annual Pass began in 2012 as a way to honor the sacrifice of our nation’s active duty military, Reserve and National Guard members, and their dependents by granting them free entrance to federal recreational lands. Army Corps of Engineers supports temporarily expanding Every Kid Outdoors recreation pass to include 5th grade students

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced today it will temporarily expand the Every Kid Outdoors recreation pass to include 5th grade students for the 2020-2021 academic year. This change will ensure that 5th grade students who may not have been able to make full use of the Every Kid Outdoors Annual 4th Grade Pass during the 2019-2020 academic year due to the COVID-19 pandemic will have a chance to do so during the current academic year through Aug. 31, 2021.

Fifth grade students (including home-schooled and free-choice learners) can visit the National Park Service website at https://www.nps.gov/kids/fifthgrade.htm to obtain and print a paper voucher. Students should present the paper voucher at federal locations that charge a per-person entrance fee, a standard amenity fee, or day use recreation fee. The voucher admits the student, as well as traveling companions who are occupants of a single, private non-commercial vehicle or the student and three persons (16 and older) where per person fees are charged. Electronic versions of paper vouchers will not be accepted. The paper voucher cannot be exchanged for the physical Every Kid Outdoors Annual 4th Grade Pass. The voucher does not apply to camping and camping-related services, or fees for specialized facilities (group picnic shelters) and events. Facilities and activities on federal recreation lands managed by private concessionaires are also not covered by the voucher.

“Today, I directed the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to implement the Interagency Pass Program at USACE-managed recreation areas to provide free access to 5th graders. We fully support the decision to expand free access in this manner to ensure that the intent of the Every Kid Outdoors program is met. USACE participation will provide an opportunity for 5th graders to take advantage of the program when they may not have been able to enjoy the use of USACE recreation areas as a result of the pandemic,” said The Honorable R. D. James, Assistant Secretary of the Army for Civil Works.

A primary goal of the Every Kid Outdoors program is to bridge the growing disconnect between the next generation and the great outdoors, and to inspire children to become future stewards of our nation’s natural and historic treasures. Is international travel making a return? New health pass promises to kick-start global travel

A trip from Houston to any international destination can lead to an obstacle course of new requirements–from mandatory quarantine periods to pre-travel COVID-19 tests.  In fact, several countries now require documentation of a negative COVID-19 test for international travel.

A digital health passport may soon be a game-changer for global travel.

BIG SKY COUNTRY:  Marfa, Texas is a beautiful somewhere in the middle of nowhere

United Airlines is now testing out the digital CommonPass app for travelers. International travelers can take COVID-19 tests up to 72 hours pre-flight, and then input their results on the common-pass app. The results stored on the CommonPass app are then scanned at the gate and passengers are given the approval to board. This app effectively allows officials in the departing country and the international destination that passengers are virus-free.

“The COVID pandemic has brought down travel and tourism across the board,” said Troy Miller, Director, Field Operations New York, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) told Businesswire. “CBP is happy to observe the efforts and be a part of the solution to build confidence in air travel and are encouraged by this CommonPass pilot.”

On Thursday, United Airlines announced the world’s first free transatlantic COVID-19 testing program for select flights from Newark to London, in an attempt to guarantee that all customers test negative for COVID-19 right before departure.

This new digital passport could potentially help countries establish safe travel corridors between cities.
