Arrest made in Houston sergeant hotel parking lot killing

Houston police arrested a man in connection with the fatal shooting of a Houston police sergeant who left behind four children, officials said Tuesday.

Police have identified the suspect as 24-year-old Robert Soliz. He was detained without incident on Interstate 10 in West Houston, Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo posted on Twitter.

No other information on the arrest was immediately released, but Acevedo promised more details later in the day.

Court records cited by Eyewitness News say Soliz was arrested earlier this year for unlawfully carrying a weapon and was out on bond. They also say that Soliz was accused in 2017 of threatening his girlfriend with murder.

Sgt. Sean Rios, 47, was shot and killed while driving to work on Interstate 45 in north Houston. The 25-year veteran of the Houston force staggered into the office of a small motel bleeding from multiple gunshot wounds. He collapsed and died about 1:30 p.m. Monday, and a manhunt ensued.

In a tweet shortly after Rios’ murder, Houston Police Officer’s Union President Joe Gamaldi asked that the sergeant and his surviving family members be kept in prayers.

“We will not stop until we find the monster/monsters responsible,” Gamaldi tweeted.

No motive was immediately disclosed, but Acevedo tweeted: “We can all breathe a sigh of relief.”

Rios was the fourth Houston police officer killed in the line of duty in the past 12 months, Acevedo said.

Sgt. Harold Preston, a 41-year veteran of the department, was shot and killed on Oct. 20 while responding to a domestic violence call. He had been preparing to retire this year.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Protogroup seeking new permit for valet parking lane for $192 Daytona hotel project

DAYTONA BEACH — A new permit application has been filed for construction of a controversial valet parking lane at the $192 million Protogroup hotel-condominium project, according to the Florida Department of Transportation.

The new application was filed by the developer after Protogroup started work on that portion of the project in October in violation of an expired permit. The new permit request is under review, said Allison Colburn, FDOT spokeswoman.

“After Protogroup was notified of the permitting issue, all construction work within the right-of-way was halted,” Colburn said by email. “Discussions with the contractor are ongoing.”

The issue with the construction of the valet lane — a 50-foot-long westbound lane on the north side of eastbound Oakridge Boulevard at North Atlantic Avenue — is the latest in nearly a decade’s worth of controversies and delays tied to the twin-tower hotel-condominium project, the biggest, most expensive development project in Daytona Beach history.

  • The Trump campaign booked a press conference at the Four Seasons suburban landscaping center, instead of the luxury hotel in Philadelphia, on Saturday.
  • President Trump first tweeted that the briefing would take place at the noted five-star venue before deleting his tweet and clarifying that it would be at a landscaping firm by the same name instead.
  • The business is located between a crematorium and an adult book store called Fantasy Land and is about a 20-minute drive from the hotel.

The Trump campaign seemingly booked the wrong venue for a press conference on Saturday, holding it in a parking lot of a landscaping company called Four Seasons instead of the five-star luxury hotel.

Less than an hour before major networks announced that Joe Biden was projected to win the 2020 presidential election, President Trump announced in a since-deleted tweet that his legal team would be holding a press conference at Four Seasons in Philadelphia.

However, what was supposed to be the noted five-star luxury hotel ended up being a car park outside a small landscaping firm called Four Seasons on the outskirts of the city.

The president later clarified in another tweet that the “big press conference” would take place at Four Seasons Total Landscaping.

The Four Seasons Hotel also confirmed on Twitter that the press briefing would not be happening on its premises and that it has “no relation” to the landscaping company.

Some reporters expressed their confusion online after they were asked to travel to the landscaping company for the briefing.

“Is Donald Trump convening the world’s press at a small landscaping company on the outskirts of Philadelphia?” a reporter for the Independent tweeted.

During the briefing, Trump’s personal lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, told reporters the campaign planned to challenge the election in court next week, making unsubstantiated claims of election fraud.

Guiliani was interrupted in the middle of the press conference when the news broke that Biden had won the presidential election.

When a reporter told Giuliani that all the networks had called the race, the former New York mayor threw his arms up and responded sarcastically: “All of them! Oh my goodness! Wow, all the networks! We have to forget about the law, judges don’t count!”

Some reporters had already left before the delayed press conference even began. Trump, who was golfing, was not present.

Man Shot In Face In Hotel Parking Lot Early Thursday

A man was shot in the face in the parking lot of a hotel in Redwood City early Thursday morning, police said.

Redwood City police responded at 4:04 a.m. to a gunshot detection system activation at the Days Inn by Wyndham hotel at 2650 El Camino Real, and shortly after that learned from Atherton police that a gunshot victim was being driven to a hospital by his friend and was found at Middlefield Road and Ringwood Avenue.

The victim said he and his friend were staying at the Days Inn and were near their vehicle parked in front of their hotel room when a suspect approached and demanded that the victim “empty his pockets,” police said.

When the victim refused, the suspect pointed a gun at the victim and shot him in the face. The victim’s injuries were not life-threatening and he has since been released from the hospital, according to police.

The suspect fled on foot and was last seen going through the hotel’s rear driveway toward El Camino Real. He is described as a black man about 5 feet 9 inches tall and 160 pounds who was last seen wearing a blue shirt, police said.

Anyone with information about the shooting is encouraged to call Detective Ryan Kimber at (650) 780-7138 or a tip line at (650) 780-7107.

Two people robbed, pistol-whipped in Braintree hotel parking lot after meeting to complete online deal, police say

Two people were robbed and pistol-whipped by two suspects when they went to meet up and complete an online transaction Saturday in a Braintree hotel parking lot, police said.

Both victims were evaluated for injuries but declined to be taken to the hospital, Braintree police said in a statement Monday afternoon.

Officers went to the back parking lot of the Hyatt Place hotel, located at 50 Forbes Road, in Braintree at about 5:30 p.m. Saturday following the report of an armed robbery, police said.

The victims told officers that a vehicle with three men drove into the parking lot, with two getting out of the car to finish the online transaction, police said.

This is when, police said, the suspects allegedly robbed the victims at gunpoint, taking several items from them and pistol-whipping them.

The victims told police the suspects went through the intersection at Forbes Road and Granite Street onto I-93 North, police said.

The victims told police they followed the suspects onto the highway, with the suspects allegedly firing one shot at their vehicle.

Police said they did not find evidence that shows the car was hit by a bullet nor any other property damage.

The suspects’ vehicle was later recovered in Boston, police said. State Police said early Sunday they assisted Boston police with the search Saturday night and found the possible suspect vehicle in Boston.

State Police also said they assisted Braintree police in investigating the incident and the shots fired scene.

The incident remains under investigation.

Coronavirus: Los Angeles Mayor Garcetti shuts down beach parking, recreation facilities due to ‘too many people packing beaches, trails and parks’

LOS ANGELES (KABC) — Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti announced Sunday night he was shutting down parking at city beaches and closing sports recreation facilities in Los Angeles County amid the coronavirus pandemic.

On Twitter, Mayor Garcetti said the decision came after officials saw “too many people packing beaches, trails and parks” over the first weekend of the “Safer at Home” order issued on Thursday.

“This is serious. Stay at home and save lives,” the Tweet said in part.

The announcement comes after officials announced Saturday that all sports and recreation areas at Los Angeles County parks will be closed until further notice amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Los Angeles County Parks and Recreation said the decision was made as an extra precaution in response to COVID-19.

The closure affects playgrounds, fitness equipment areas, courts, skate parks, multi-use fields, pickleball courts, golf courses and lawn bowling.

Local and state officials continue to push for social distancing during the “Safer at Home” order issued last week.
