Phoenix Planning And Development Department Launches New On-Line Services For Short-Term Vacation Rental Property Registrations And Searches

November 6, 2020

Searching for or registering a short-term vacation rental property in Phoenix is a lot easier now, thanks to a new online self-registration portal. The city of Phoenix’s Planning and Development Department just launched the portal that will make the registration process more efficient for property owners. It will also make it easier to find rentals and the owner’s emergency contact information by surrounding property owners should there be management issues.

In 2019, the Arizona Legislature authorized municipalities to create provisions for short-term vacation rentals (Arizona Revised Statutes (A.R.S. §9-500.39) to help manage them as the law requires all cities to allow them within their city. Phoenix adopted the Short-Term Vacation Rental Ordinance (G-6653) in early 2020, to implement the law passed by the State Legislature.

The Short-Term Vacation Rental Ordinance (ORDINANCE G-6653) requires owners of short-term or vacation rentals to register with the city and provide emergency and complaint contact information. The ordinance outlines vacation rental violations and reaffirms prohibited types of uses, such as banquet halls and large parties, and introduces an enhanced penalty structure.

Two new features have been added to the website and takes customers directly to the online PHX At Your Service Portals. Property owners should visit https://www.phoenix.gov/pdd/codes-ordinances/short-term-rentals to register their short-term vacation rental property. Neighbors impacted by a short-term vacation rental property should visit that site to find the contact information for the manager of that property to communicate about renter issues.

This press release was produced by the City of Phoenix. The views expressed here are the author’s own.

Teachers, Students To Get Diwali Vacation From Online Classes: Maharashtra Minister

Teachers, Students To Get Diwali Vacation From Online Classes: Maharashtra Minister

Teachers, Students To Get Diwali Vacation: Maharashtra Minister

New Delhi:

Teachers and students in Maharashtra who are part of online education will get Diwali vacation, state Education Minister Varsha Gaikwad said on Wednesday. “A final decision to this effect will be taken soon,” Ms Gaikwad told reporters, adding that authorities have been directed against conducting any examination during the Diwali vacation period. Schools were shifted to the online mode in March this year due to the COVID-19 lockdown.

Ms Gaikwad said Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray is taking views of state advocate general and other authorities concerned regarding reopening of Class 11. “The delay in (physical reopening of Class 11 lectures) is due to judicial process but online classes of the class is getting good response,” she added.

Ms Gaikwad said the department of education is focusing on the overall development of students by using modern technology. “We will ensure they take more interest in education and improve their knowledge,” she added.

The Maharashtra education department on Monday, November 2, had started free online classes for students of Class 11 to prevent loss of the academic session due to the COVID-19 outbreak. Over 60,000 first-year junior college (FYJC or Class 11) students have so far enrolled for these classes, State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) Director Dinkar Patil said. The decision to start online classes free of charge for FYJC Arts, Science and Commerce students was taken to avoid the academic loss till colleges start functioning normally, he said.

Jesselton Recreation Club | Daily Express Online

April 1, 1940

Annual General Meeting and the Jubilee Year Marking the hurdling of a milestone in the history of the institution, the Annual General meeting of the Recreation Club on 14th March 1940 was a significant affair. There was almost a record attendance (for such meetings) and in the absence of the Chairman, the Hon. Mr R.F. Evans, on a pleasant mission to Brunei’s coronation celebrations, Mr J.S. Aberuethy of the retiring Committee (who is proceeding on home leave in a few months time) took the chair.

After the usual ceremonial of confirming the minutes of  previous meetings he pointed out that the silver anniversary year of the club as a very senior member put it “represented record progress in the club history”.

The 1939 accounts kindly audited by Mr R. Johnson disclosed a handsome cash carry forward of $354.83 and that the outstanding Government building loan of $1000.00 was paid off during the year is enough excuse for the club Executive not to have gone ahead with the installation of further amenities in the club itself. That it is as popular as ever is emphasised by a further increase in membership and thanks to the sliding scale of subscriptions, it boasts of 166 resident and large number of outstation members.

One highly interesting part of the proceedings was the auction of newspapers and periodicals and which with the rotund Jules Stephens waxing eloquent as a smartly successful auctioneer resulted in the club reading room being assured of a regular supply of non-stop variety reading matter pouring in from all corners of the globe.

A set of wellknown monthlies and weeklies from the Old and New Worlds will be augmented by some very entertaining magazines published in nearer climes of the Philippines, India, Ceylon, China and Malaya and will provide all tastes of newsy and literary clubbists with plenty to gloat over amounting to the large number of twenty four periodicals exclusive of the local productions including the Herald which find their way in as a matter of course.

The elections which for the first time did away with the old time prerogatives of certain members who were also members of the Sports Club did not see much difference as the members concerned, through their “labour of love” have become to be regarded as important adjuncts of the club executive mechanism.

Mr G.S. Kler who has had the privilege of holding the Honorary Secretary-Treasurer’s portfolios for almost the last two years has been entrusted with the responsibilities a third term.

Being re-elected as the head of the Executive, the Club will continue to have the benefit of the invaluable services of Honourable Mr R.F. Evans and the General Committee undertaking the task of steering the destinies of the institution for the ensuing year as elected at the meeting, is Honourable Mr R.F. Evans (Chairman), Mr T.J.H. Speedy, Rev. S.M. Collier, Mr Hiew Sin Yong, Mr Li Tet Phui, Mr Li Yun Fook and Mr G.S. Kier (Honorary

Two people robbed, pistol-whipped in Braintree hotel parking lot after meeting to complete online deal, police say

Two people were robbed and pistol-whipped by two suspects when they went to meet up and complete an online transaction Saturday in a Braintree hotel parking lot, police said.

Both victims were evaluated for injuries but declined to be taken to the hospital, Braintree police said in a statement Monday afternoon.

Officers went to the back parking lot of the Hyatt Place hotel, located at 50 Forbes Road, in Braintree at about 5:30 p.m. Saturday following the report of an armed robbery, police said.

The victims told officers that a vehicle with three men drove into the parking lot, with two getting out of the car to finish the online transaction, police said.

This is when, police said, the suspects allegedly robbed the victims at gunpoint, taking several items from them and pistol-whipping them.

The victims told police the suspects went through the intersection at Forbes Road and Granite Street onto I-93 North, police said.

The victims told police they followed the suspects onto the highway, with the suspects allegedly firing one shot at their vehicle.

Police said they did not find evidence that shows the car was hit by a bullet nor any other property damage.

The suspects’ vehicle was later recovered in Boston, police said. State Police said early Sunday they assisted Boston police with the search Saturday night and found the possible suspect vehicle in Boston.

State Police also said they assisted Braintree police in investigating the incident and the shots fired scene.

The incident remains under investigation.

How to shop the Waldorf Astoria’s online auction

Kaminski Auctions in Beverly, Mass., is handling the colossal sale, which features 15,000 lots, including some with multiple items. The furnishings filled nearly every public and private space in the hotel: the celebrity suites, guest rooms, lobby, bars, restaurants and fitness center. The live bidding runs through Oct. 24; the first day alone will put nearly 700 objects on the auction block. (All proceeds will go to St. Bartholomew’s Conservancy.)

“It is overwhelming,” said Stuart Whitehurst, an independent appraiser and antiques consultant who appears on PBS’s “Antiques Roadshow.” “This sale is a marathon, not a sprint.”

The Waldorf Astoria, which has lived at its current address since 1931, plans to reopen in 2022 with a more modern look for its 375 condominium residences and 375 hotel rooms. To make way for the new, it’s getting rid of the old, with a few priceless exceptions, such as John F. Kennedy’s rocking chair, a clock from the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago and Cole Porter’s personal piano. (During the renovation, the chair and clock will reside with the New-York Historical Society.) By comparison, the objects for sale are more standard-issue hotel furnishings that have been elevated by nostalgia for the golden age of hospitality and its glittery clientele.

“Although the Waldorf Astoria is an art deco landmark known for its opulent lobby and public rooms and for its famous guests, including many U.S. presidents, its interior fittings are not considered particularly noteworthy by design experts,” said Anthony Barzilay Freund, editorial director and director of fine art at 1stDibs, the e-commerce site. “That said, there is intrinsic value in living with furniture that has a compelling narrative, and you can’t put a price tag on that.”

But you can put a bid on it.

If you are new to the auction game (as I am) or are gobsmacked by the sheer quantity (as I was), Whitehurst offered some tips on navigating the sale like a paddle pro. First, he recommended skipping the first few days of the auction, which are loaded with items from the celebrity suites. Although there is no guarantee that Monroe bathed in the light of the Chinese lamps in her namesake suite or Gen. Douglas MacArthur tossed his garbage in the wooden trash cans, the real or imagined brush with fame will cause the prices to rise exponentially. For example, the day before the live auction, the current bid for two embroidered pug pillows from the Royal Suite was listed at $610, six times more than the high estimate. The bid for three framed photos of Elizabeth Taylor was double the $300 estimate. And I would love to meet the person who is willing to pay $385 for a print of a single shoe that hung in the Monroe suite and had a starting bid of $5. Maybe he or she is looking to complete a pair? By comparison, many objects from later in the week still have no bidders. Among them: a blue-and-red-striped French carved chair, a
