“The College’s athletic teams have struggled without a home field for many years. Frankly, it’s a social justice issue when poorer community college students don’t have the decent and safe facilities that wealthier college students take for granted,’’ said Union County College President Dr. Margaret McMenamin.  “So we are pleased to partner with the County on this endeavor. Our soccer, lacrosse, and track athletes need to compete on a modern, safe, state-of-the-art field. This includes our nationally recognized women’s soccer team that finished the 2018 season ranked third in the nation at the National Junior College Athletic Association tournament…”

The 12-acre site can be used for Division I athletic competitions and is considered to be the best in the county according to officials.  The complex also includes lighting for night competition, bleachers for up to 800 fans, a press box, an underground storm water detention area and provides scenic views of the park and the Watchung mountains.

Developers constructed a dedicated entrance to the field at the intersection of Woodland Road and Oak Ridge Road.  It leads into the parking lot which contains 120 spaces for use by field-goers.   The lot also has its own exit from the park across from the Clark Pool.

“This magnificent facility now takes its place as one of the top-notch recreational fields in the state,” said Freeholder Chairman Alexander Mirabella. “Union County is highly regarded for its award-winning parks system, and the Oak Ridge Park Athletic Field is a great new attraction for our residents and student-athletes to enjoy.”

US and Britain officially sign agreement on post-Brexit air travel

The United States and Britain officially signed an agreement on air travel following the European country’s vote of independence from the European Union.

The Air Services Agreement was signed on Tuesday by U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, and the British counterpart U.K. Transport Minister Grant Shapps, according to Reuters. The signing of the document officially concludes negotiations reached in 2018.

Britain voted to leave the EU in a June 2016 referendum, but progress on approving a plan for the nation’s exit was stalled for more than three years. In October 2019, U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson secured a Brexit deal with the EU, but Parliament later blocked a vote on the deal, forcing the prime minister to ask the EU for another extension to pass it.

Johnson then called a December election in an effort to win enough conservative seats to get the deal passed. He led the Conservative Party to victory in the United Kingdom’s legislature, winning 80 seats and a Tory majority. A month later, members of Parliament passed the “Withdrawal Agreement Act” and sent it to the queen for approval, making “Brexit” official law in January 2020.

The new U.S.-U.K. aviation agreement keeps flight operations between the countries similar to when Britain was in the EU, Reuters reported. However, the coronavirus pandemic has limited international travel.

Some airlines, including United, have launched new COVID-19 testing programs to deter government officials from advocating future travel restrictions. In October, United announced that it will begin the testing program on flights from Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey to London Heathrow starting Nov. 16 until Dec. 11.

Violent Soho officially release live versions of ‘Vacation Forever’ and ‘Canada’

Violent Soho have officially released live versions of their tracks ‘Vacation Forever’ and ‘Canada’ today (October 30).

Both appeared as singles from the group’s most recent studio album, ‘Everything Is A-OK’. Today’s live versions are the bands first releases since the album hit shelves in April.

The live renditions were recorded during Violent Soho’s performance for The State of Music at Brisbane’s Plutonium Studios. The band shared videos of the recordings earlier this year, but today is the first time they have been officially released.

Listen to the live tracks below:

“This live in-studio performance was recorded at a time when we were still just figuring out that our entire year’s plans had been cancelled,” the band said in a press statement.

“We’d love you all to have been there.”

Earlier this month, it was announced that Violent Soho had been nominated for four ARIA awards for ‘Everything Is A-Ok’. The band received nods for Best Rock Album, Best Video for ‘Pick It Up Again’, Best Cover Art and Engineer Of The Year (Greg Wales). The ARIA winners will be announced on November 25.

Aside from releasing music, Violent Soho have spent 2020 engaging in a number of charitable initiatives. The band partnered with a local rugby league team to design a limited edition jersey in August, with all proceeds donated to the club.

The group were also one of many to sign rare guitars for Support Act’s charity auction earlier this year.
