Petrol bombs thrown at police recreation club

Police say petrol bombs were thrown at their sports and recreation club in Mong Kok in the early hours of Tuesday morning, damaging a van parked inside.

The force says nine petrol bombs were thrown in the car park at around 1am.

Media footage showed the front of a truck was burned out, but no further damage was visible.

Police say they believe that three people were responsible for the attack.

They added that they are looking into whether an 18-year-old man they arrested in Sham Shui Po for carrying pepper spray was involved in the petrol bomb incident.

Burlington Country Club cracks down on non-members using grounds for recreation

Burlington Country Club — a popular spot for walking and wintertime sledding during the off-season for golfing — is cracking down on non-members who come on the property for outdoor activities.

The country club recently posted signs saying the club’s grounds were closed to the public. This has always been the case, but it hasn’t been as heavily enforced, said Burlington Country Club General Manager Jason Shattie.

“It started becoming a problem with vandalism, disrespect of the property, and it’s a huge liability risk for the country club,” Shattie said Monday.

Shattie also said that members pay fees which go toward the upkeep of the grounds and facilities. It’s an equity issue to allow non-members, who do not pay fees, onto the property to use the grounds, he said.

Vermonters have been encouraged to take part in outdoor activities to stay physically and mentally healthy during the COVID-19 pandemic. Some lamented on social media about the crack-down, especially during a time when so many are heading outside.

Shattie said the move is not related to the pandemic — it’s just meant to solve an issue that has become more acute over time.

Burlington Country Club, which also has a pool and a clubhouse with a dining room, is open year-round for members.

Marianna Recreation director visits Optimist Club | Local

Marianna Recreation Director Clay Wells visited the Optimist Club of Marianna recently to talk about the planned restoration of Jennings Field on South Caledonia Street.

The property where Jennings field was established was originally donated to the city for the youth sports complex by the Optimist Club of Marianna. The projected renovation, rebuilding, and upgrades to the park area are projected to cost in the neighborhood of $800,000 to $900,000, with $380,000 of that from insurance funds received after the storm. A large portion of the remainder is expected from the state, including recreational and storm water upgrade grant funding.

Once completed, the park will include a multi-purpose sports field, which can be used for soccer, football, and baseball. It will also include a 2,500 foot cork-based walking, running track, a new playground, a splash pad, a dog park, a skateboard park, and a new, large pavilion. There will also be new restrooms constructed and the parking areas will be upgraded.

All in all, Jennings Park should be another gem added to the outdoor resources that our citizens can be proud of. The Optimist Club of Marianna thanked Wells for his hard work and dedication to the citizens and youth of our area.

St. J Recreation Department Forms Social Running/Walking Club | Local News

ST. JOHNSBURY — Runners and walkers greeting each other at Tuesday’s first run of an adult (18-plus) running club were greeted by a fresh layer of snow as they gathered at Four Seasons Playground on Main Street.

It didn’t deter, and in fact may have helped boost, the turnout of better than 20 people looking to warm up in the wintry conditions. Started by the St. J Recreation Department, this weekly occasion is geared toward all looking to get outdoors, said Rec Department Director of Recreational Programs Joe Fox.

Jesselton Recreation Club | Daily Express Online

April 1, 1940

Annual General Meeting and the Jubilee Year Marking the hurdling of a milestone in the history of the institution, the Annual General meeting of the Recreation Club on 14th March 1940 was a significant affair. There was almost a record attendance (for such meetings) and in the absence of the Chairman, the Hon. Mr R.F. Evans, on a pleasant mission to Brunei’s coronation celebrations, Mr J.S. Aberuethy of the retiring Committee (who is proceeding on home leave in a few months time) took the chair.

After the usual ceremonial of confirming the minutes of  previous meetings he pointed out that the silver anniversary year of the club as a very senior member put it “represented record progress in the club history”.

The 1939 accounts kindly audited by Mr R. Johnson disclosed a handsome cash carry forward of $354.83 and that the outstanding Government building loan of $1000.00 was paid off during the year is enough excuse for the club Executive not to have gone ahead with the installation of further amenities in the club itself. That it is as popular as ever is emphasised by a further increase in membership and thanks to the sliding scale of subscriptions, it boasts of 166 resident and large number of outstation members.

One highly interesting part of the proceedings was the auction of newspapers and periodicals and which with the rotund Jules Stephens waxing eloquent as a smartly successful auctioneer resulted in the club reading room being assured of a regular supply of non-stop variety reading matter pouring in from all corners of the globe.

A set of wellknown monthlies and weeklies from the Old and New Worlds will be augmented by some very entertaining magazines published in nearer climes of the Philippines, India, Ceylon, China and Malaya and will provide all tastes of newsy and literary clubbists with plenty to gloat over amounting to the large number of twenty four periodicals exclusive of the local productions including the Herald which find their way in as a matter of course.

The elections which for the first time did away with the old time prerogatives of certain members who were also members of the Sports Club did not see much difference as the members concerned, through their “labour of love” have become to be regarded as important adjuncts of the club executive mechanism.

Mr G.S. Kler who has had the privilege of holding the Honorary Secretary-Treasurer’s portfolios for almost the last two years has been entrusted with the responsibilities a third term.

Being re-elected as the head of the Executive, the Club will continue to have the benefit of the invaluable services of Honourable Mr R.F. Evans and the General Committee undertaking the task of steering the destinies of the institution for the ensuing year as elected at the meeting, is Honourable Mr R.F. Evans (Chairman), Mr T.J.H. Speedy, Rev. S.M. Collier, Mr Hiew Sin Yong, Mr Li Tet Phui, Mr Li Yun Fook and Mr G.S. Kier (Honorary
