Mahwah Recreation Hosts 1st Annual Holiday Lighting Contest

MAHWAH, NJ — How early is too early to put up your holiday decorations? The jury is still out, but, if you’d like to participate in Mahwah’s first annual holiday lighting contest, it may be time to consider getting them together.

The Mahwah Recreation Committee is sponosring a new, annual, holiday lighting contest starting this year.

“With the uncertainty of today’s times, we wanted to launch a new event that would embrace the creativity and spirit of all Township residents throughout Mahwah while still adhering to the health guidelines during this pandemic,” the committee said, in a statement.

The contest will have three winners from each of the six sections of town, the committee said, meaning 18 total winners will be selected. Town sections, according to the news release, will be determined based on the town’s recycling sections.

Judging will take place the week of Dec. 13, but the deadline for registration is Dec. 6. Winners will be announced Dec. 19.

Prizes will be in the form of gift certificates to area restauarants. The winner gets $100, $50 for second place and $25 for third place.

Wentworth hotel’s annual Illumination and Toy Drive to be held Dec. 1

NEW CASTLE — The Wentworth by the Sea hotel’s annual Illumination and Toy Drive will look a little different this year, but will still be held Dec. 1, beginning at 6 p.m.

Due to current COVID-19 restrictions, the annual event will be limited to hotel and restaurant guests only, so proper safety and distancing protocols can be met. Despite these necessary changes, Wentworth by the Sea is planning a fun and joyous event for overnight and dining guests of the hotel.

Reservations are sure to fill up quickly so those wishing to attend should book as soon as possible. For overnight guests, the Wentworth has two packages for maximum enjoyment of the festivities:

• The Overnight Family Package includes overnight accommodations on Dec. 1, hot cocoa and cookies upon arrival, and access to the Illumination event. Rates start at $279.

• Date Night Holiday Light Package includes overnight accommodations on Dec. 1, a boozy hot cocoa/coffee and cookies upon arrival, dinner for two at Salt, and access to the Illumination event. Reservations for dining should be made directly with Salt. Rates start at $399.

This special, traditional event at the Wentworth will also include an appearance by Santa in his sleigh, with elves to take Christmas lists from children. There also will be live music and carolers for the enjoyment of guests.

Another favorite tradition of the resort will also continue – the unveiling of the Gingerbread House. This annual creation is always a favorite with hotel guests and locals who look forward to marveling at the over-sized, magical gingerbread house made by the talented chefs of Wentworth by the Sea.

The Wentworth by the Sea will be conducting its annual Toy Drive once again this year. Toy drop off will be Dec. 1-17. Toys can be dropped off only Monday through Thursday, 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Anyone bringing an unwrapped, unopened gift to help support children of the Seacoast will receive 10% off at Salt; alcohol excluded.

Prince Charles and Camilla to Travel to Germany to Commemorate the Annual National Day of Mourning

Earlier this year the Prince of Wales made the first royal visit outside of the UK since the coronavirus pandemic began when he traveled to Kuwait to offer condolences following the death of Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah. And now Charles and Camilla are making a joint overseas visit at the request of the British government to pay their respects on Germany’s national day of mourning.

Clarence House has announced that the heir to the throne and his wife will travel to Berlin on Sunday, November 15, to attend the Central Remembrance Ceremony at the German parliament following an invitation from President of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier. It is the first time that a member of the British royal family has attended the ceremony and Prince Charles will deliver a speech. Beforehand, the couple will pay their respects at a wreath-laying ceremony at the Neue Wache, the Central Memorial of the Federal Republic of Germany for the Victims of War and Dictatorship.

“The National Day of Mourning will this year focus on the German-British friendship, which has grown in the 75 years since the end of the Second World War. The event pays tribute to the Allied commitment to the liberation from Nazi occupation and to the reconstruction, re-democratisation and subsequent reunification of Germany. It remembers all victims of war and tyranny,” Clarence House said in a statement.

The trip follows the royal family’s appearance en masse at at the Remembrance Sunday service in central London. The annual event was scaled back because of the COVID-19 pandemic but 10 royals attended in person to pay their respects to the war dead alongside a small number of veterans and representatives from government and the military.

Prince Charles has visited Germany more than 30 times both publicly and privately, with his first visit taking place in 1962 and his most recent in 2019 with Camilla.

Dear Care and Feeding,

We have three kids. Our daughter is nearly 13 and the eldest. We have been discussing what to do this winter for a family trip, and my daughter insists she doesn’t like skiing and has no interest in going.

The kids have been on skis since they were 3. They’ve skied and/or snowboarded every winter. The boys, my husband, and I love it. We’ve traveled every winter to a ski destination and have been careful to choose places that offer a wide range of fun winter activities (like dogsledding, tubing, snowmobiling) and a fun town vibe that the kids can enjoy. Our daughter grumbles every time we go skiing. She’s really only good for about half a day on the slopes. She’s a good sport and resigns herself to going because she wants to travel, but we really don’t want her to hate it and we want her to have good memories of family trips. My husband and I sometimes will take an extra weekend and go by ourselves, but we feel guilty a little bit because the boys want to come too, and we LOVE watching them explore and have fun on the slopes.

We don’t only take the kids skiing. Travel is a big deal to my husband and me. We’ve taken the kids to a few National Parks, big cities on each coast, Disney, and are currently saving for our first trip overseas.

I know some of this behavior is normal teenage behavior, but she’s always maintained she doesn’t like skiing. Her idea of a fun vacation is sitting in the sun on a beach somewhere, which makes my husband and me cringe (we can’t imagine anything more boring or miserable). How do we manage the disparity in preference to vacation types and activities? We’ve reminded her that one day she’ll be happy for the skills and experiences she has. Do we just keep planning these trips with compromises to places that have activities she can take advantage of (even if she doesn’t) and remind her when she’s paying the bills and designing her own trips she can sit on a beach all day?

I doubt that your almost-13-year-old needs to be reminded that she doesn’t pay the bills, nor do I believe her current lack of disposable income overrules her right to express her likes and dislikes. I realize some readers might not be able to find much sympathy for a kid who just isn’t that into her family’s annual ski resort visits, but honestly, I do feel a bit sorry for her. Vacation on hold? House bill would allow feds to carry over unused annual leave

Some federal employees likely aren’t taking vacation right now, either because they’re under state stay-at-home orders or there’s simply too much work to do — or some combination of both.

A few House Democrats are eyeing new legislation that would ensure federal employees can hold onto the annual leave they’d otherwise have to forfeit at the end of the year.

Rep. Jennifer Wexton (D-Va.) introduced the Federal Frontline Worker Leave Protection Act, which would specifically allow employees to carry over unused annual leave due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Under existing policy, most federal employees can carry up to 30 days of leave to the next year. Any accrued leave that’s left is usually gone.


But current statute does allow agencies to restore forfeited annual leave to federal employees, but only in specific circumstances. Agencies could, according to regulations from the Office of Personnel Management, restore lost annual leave when there’s an “exigency of public business.”

This may include scenarios where there’s an urgent need for an employee to be at work and therefore can’t use his or her annual leave, OPM has said.

Wexton’s bill would specify the current coronavirus pandemic as an “exigency of public business” for the purposes of restoring annual leave lost before, during or after the date of the legislation’s enactment.

“During the unprecedented challenges of COVID-19, our federal workers are stepping up and working tirelessly to help Americans weather this crisis,” Wexton said Tuesday in a statement. “It’s all hands on deck right now and taking time off is not an option for many federal employees. Federal workers should not be forced to lose their benefits while they carry out the essential work of government. We owe it to them to protect what they’ve earned.”

The bill has a few co-sponsors, including Reps. Don Beyer (D-Va.), Stephen Lynch (D-Mass.) and Jamie Raskin (D-Md.), as well as District of Columbia Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton.

The Pentagon issued related guidance on leave for military members last month. The Defense Department is allowing active-duty members to accrue more leave than usual— anywhere from 60 to 120 days — and hold on to it through 2023.

DoD’s stop move orders, which run through at least June 30, are clearly preventing servicemembers from using their leave, Matthew Donovan, the undersecretary of Defense for personnel and readiness, said.

“Leave is vital to the continued health and welfare of our service members and civilian workforce and is key to the Secretary of Defense’s first priority in responding to COVID-19-protecting our service members, DoD civilians, and their families,” he said in the guidance.

Beyond Wexton’s legislation on annual leave, several other congressional members have introduced bills of their own that would compensate or protect federal employees working through the pandemic.

Push for federal hazard pay continues

Congressional Democrats have been most vocal in advocating for hazard pay for federal employees working on the frontlines of the pandemic, but there are signs of bipartisan support.
