Michigan agency recommends $5.4M for recreation projects

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (AP) — Michigan officials have selected 14 community and state parks, trails and sports facilities to share $5.4 million in federal grants.

The state Department of Natural Resources said the money will come from the federal Land and Water Conservation Fund, which is supported by revenues from gas and oil development from the Gulf of Mexico.

“The Land and Water Conservation Fund is pivotal in supporting projects that improve the quality of outdoor recreation for communities across Michigan,” said Dan Lord, DNR grants manager.

Projects recommended for support are in Bay, Berrien, Eaton, Houghton, Ingham, Macomb, Oakland, Oceana, Van Buren, Washtenaw and Wayne counties.

They include campground developments, park renovations and improvements, accessible playground development, accessibility improvements and more.

The DNR uses Land and Water Conservation Fund dollars to help develop public outdoor recreation facilities and provide matching grants for local governments to do likewise. Eligible applicants include Native American tribes, villages, cities, townships and counties, and divisions within the DNR.

After Congress appropriates funds each year, the Interior Secretary divides it up among the states, which recommends projects for approval from the National Park Service.

The Great American Outdoors Act, signed into law this past August, established permanent funding for the fund. Michigan officials say they expect the state to get a bigger share in the future.

Rajon Rondo’s Vacation Photos Go Viral as He Weighs Free Agency

Rajon Rondo of the Los Angeles Lakers.

Rajon Rondo might have an important decision to make in free agency coming up, but in the meantime, the veteran point guard is living his best life basking in the glory of winning an NBA title with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Photos and videos from Rondo’s vacation in the Maldives went viral this week, showing that the 34-year-old is enjoying his time after emerging from the NBA bubble victorious. Rondo’s girlfriend, Latoia Fitzgerald, shared the photos on her Instagram and they quickly made their way around social media.

Fitzgerald and Rondo reportedly started dating earlier this year. She gave a touching shoutout to him on Instagram following the Lakers winning the title.

“Congratulations babe! Two rings with two of the biggest franchises in the NBA!” she wrote. “A gem! A leader! A true boss!”

Rajon Rondo Will be Wanted Man in Free Agency

Rondo is expected to have multiple suitors when free agency eventually rolls around — including two in the same city. It was reported this week that the Los Angeles Clippers will have interest in bringing Rondo aboard. However, they’ll have to compete for the Lakers, who want to retain a key piece of their title-winning rotation.

Rondo is expected to opt-out of his $2.7 million player option for next season to test the open market. Seeing as he was on a veteran’s minimum, it makes sense, especially considering his stock is high.

Rondo had his ups and downs during last season but lived up to his “Playoff Rondo” persona in the postseason. He averaged 24.7 minutes in the playoffs, rebounding from a fractured thumb he suffered during a practice in the bubble. He put up 8.9 points, 6.6 assists and 4.3 rebounds during the postseason. His leadership and ability to make plays with the second unit helped the Lakers turn the tide in a handful of games.

Kendrick Perkins: Clippers Need Rajon Rondo

Rondo was very much a missing link for the Lakers off the bench, something the Clippers were very clearly missing as things fell apart in the playoffs. Former NBA champion and Rondo-teammate Kendrick Perkins thinks that the Clippers need to make landing the veteran guard a priority.

“The Clippers are missing a leader. Kawhi Leonard is not a leader, he’s a hell of a basketball player but he’s not a leader. When you look at him, when he played with the Raptors, Kyle Lowry was the leader,” Perkins said on ESPN’s The Jump. “You need a guy like Rajon Rondo, who’s the ultimate floor general that could get guys into their spots. Halifax travel agency seeking to extend Atlantic bubble to Cuban resort this winter

HALIFAX — A Halifax travel agency is offering two weeklong trips to Cuba reserved exclusively for residents of the Atlantic Canada bubble.

Absolute Travel Specialists says it will charter two Air Canada flights — one in February and another in March — for Atlantic Canadians who want to get some sun in the winter and stay safe from COVID-19.

“People are really anxious about getting out,” Fred Mack, company co-owner and vice-president, said in an interview Tuesday. “It’s amazing.” He said about 75 out of 146 seats have already been sold for the first of two vacation packages.

Mack said the hotel in Cayo Coco will be reserved exclusively for Atlantic Canadians during their stay. Travellers, he added, will need to remain in the Atlantic region for 21 days before they fly.

Mack said the reason his trips are exclusive to Atlantic Canadians is to preserve the travel bubble. Since July, residents of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island have been permitted to travel within the Atlantic region while access has been restricted to everyone else.

But Mack isn’t fully recreating the bubble with the chartered flights to Cuba — anyone returning from the Caribbean will need to isolate for 14 days upon their return home. He said he’s hoping, however, that a pilot project at Calgary’s airport will help spur officials to change the rules by the time the first plane is scheduled to leave in February.

Starting in November, foreign travellers arriving at the Calgary International Airport or through Coutts land border crossing will be administered a rapid COVID-19 test before they begin their quarantine. If they test negative, they will be allowed to end their isolation after taking a second test a week later.

Mack said officials at Halifax’s airport authority told him they were “looking forward” to his company’s two flights to Cuba. “It gives them an incentive to push the federal government into trying to get possible rapid testing into Halifax, trying to open up the market,” he said.

Halifax airport spokesperson Tiffany Chase said Tuesday in a statement that Mack’s idea for Atlantic Canadian travellers is “creative.” She said the airport authority hasn’t heard from the federal or provincial government’s about a rapid COVID-19 testing project, but she said it was open to it.

A spokesperson for Global Affairs Canada said in an email that if Atlantic Canadians choose to ignore the country’s travel advisories — which warn against non-essential travel outside the country — they may have limited access to consular services.

Prince Edward Island’s chief public health officer, Dr. Heather Morrison, told a news conference Tuesday that the planned trips to Cuba are “not realistic.”

“Islanders who leave here for outside the country, for outside the bubble, will have to isolate for 14 days when they return,” she said.

The cost of the all-inclusive package ranges from about $1,500 per person to about $1,700 per person.

Johns Creek Recreation and Parks Division named state’s top agency | Johns Creek

Johns Creek residents know they have a great parks and recreation department. Now the rest of the state knows as well.

The Johns Creek Recreation and Parks Division was recently honored with four awards by the Georgia Recreation and Parks Association, including being named State Agency of the Year.

The city’s park and rec department was also recognized as the state’s Agency of the Year, while Parks Recreation Manger Kirk Franz was named Administrator of the Year for District 7 and  Dianna Aichele was named Volunteer of the Year.

The GRPA Agency of the Year Award recognizes excellence and leadership in providing quality recreation programs, parks and facilities that enhance the quality of life in communities.

“These esteemed industry recognitions further exemplify Johns Creek as a city with exceptional recreation and park management leaders, volunteers and programs,” Mayor Mike Bodker said. “Our talented staff and dedicated volunteers have helped to create one of the most admired and recognized family of park facilities and community programming in the state and across the entire southeast.”

The District 7 Agency of the Year Award recognizes the top-notch service and quality of facilities within a city. Johns Creek Recreation and Parks Division serves a population of 84,946. The Johns Creek team consists of five full-time employees, six permanent part-time employees and two part-time seasonal swim coaches for the JCAT Swim Team that competes in the GRPA State Swim Meet.

Franz was recognized for his dedication to ensuring the highest level of recreation programing to meet the needs of a diverse community. Kirk was the first recreation staff member after the city of Johns Creek was incorporated in December 2006.

City officials said that from the outset, Franz began the development and consistency for all programing including innovative events like the first City of Johns Creek 5K; theming this environmentally friendly 5K, “Go Green – Be Green!”

Aichele has been a volunteer with the City of Johns Creek and at Park Place Adult Activity Center for nine years, since the Park Place facility opened. City officials said she has proven herself “an indispensable participant who is always willing to help new Park Place members, programing, and many other projects pertaining to Park Place.”

The city maintains over 400 acres of parkland, green space, and nature preserves. The city currently operates four primary parks: Newtown Park, Ocee Park, Shakerag Park and the Autrey Mill Nature Preserve.

The city is in the process of design and master planning for five  additional parks: Cauley Creek, Linear Park, Bell/Boles Roads, Morton Road and State Bridge Road. The current park system offers a variety of settings and venues for multiple recreation activities accessible to people of all ages and abilities.

The Georgia Recreation and Park Association was formed in 1945 as a private, non-profit institution to support and promote the recreation and park industries within the

Help! My Travel Agency Shut Down and I’m Out $2,000

Earlier this year, I used STA Travel to book a British Airways flight from Tucson, Ariz., to South Africa, scheduled to depart in March. Then the pandemic hit, one of the flight legs was canceled and I canceled my trip. After some back and forth, STA secured a refund from British Airways. I was told by an STA representative that my airfare — $2,059.36 — would be credited back to my credit card account within 60 days. Two months came and went. Then I learned that STA had gone out of business. Kaitlin

When I first read your email, I was hit with an inkling of hope that your credit card company could rush in and save the day. Still, I set off to learn more about the laws and policies at play, so I did usually do when I start a Tripped Up column: I emailed some industry sources and started a Google Doc to organize my thoughts.

The notes became a rabbit hole, expanding with news coverage of STA’s collapse, a list of potential interview subjects, email addresses for international press offices and lengthy financial documents. From the chicken scratch, one truth emerged: Anyone attempting to recoup funds from an out-of-business company will likely confront uphill battles, tall orders and every other cliché in the book.

“In general, when a company goes into bankruptcy, basically it’s the vultures picking over the bones,” said Ira Rheingold, the executive director of the National Association of Consumer Advocates, a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit. “The last people who will get a piece of those bones are going to be the unsecured creditors: the consumers.”

Formerly a major travel agency for youth and student trips, STA Travel filed for bankruptcy in August after a crippling flurry of pandemic-related cancellations; it was the first major travel agency to fall because of the pandemic. Although STA’s Instagram account has been dormant for more than two months, the comments live on as a record of unanswered questions and in-limbo refunds: “I have a student that is needing an update on her refund status and there is literally no way to reach anyone,” wrote one user. “I wonder how many people got robbed of their hard-saved holiday money,” lamented another.

From the start, your case felt like a maze of sharp corners and dead ends. First I visited the STA Travel website: shut down. Then I emailed the customer service agent you had corresponded with: bounceback. When I reached out to the press office of Diethelm Keller Group, STA’s former parent company that is based in Switzerland, and I got the following statement back: “As STA Travel Holding AG is in insolvency proceedings, Diethelm Keller Group is not in a position to provide further support or information.”

I contacted the Arizona Attorney General’s office after discovering one address for STA in Arizona — possibly a franchise — but was told by a spokeswoman that all consumer complaints are confidential.

I considered calling
