Recreation & Senior Services | City of Newport Beach
All Newport Beach City facilities, including City Hall, will be closed to the public as of Wednesday, March 18, following the executive order from the Orange County Health Care Agency to slow the transmission of COVID-19 (coronavirus). City staff will continue to provide services by phone, email and through the web.
As of March 16, 2020, all community centers are closed. We have cancelled all winter recreation classes, youth & adult sports leagues, Active Kids programs and aquatics through April 12, 2020. All City of Newport Beach ACE programs will be suspended until at least April 20, 2020 due to the Newport-Mesa Unified School District closure. ACE classes will resume when schools re-open. The OASIS Senior Center will remain closed to the public through Sunday, April 12.
We are currently NOT ACCEPTING any new registration for Spring 2020 until further notice. We look forward to bringing programming back soon. The situation is being consistently evaluated to determine when programming can commence for spring. Look for emails with updates on the spring session.
Though City parks are open, on March 23, the City closed amenities within the parks including
playgrounds, fitness equipment, fields (baseball, soccer, multi-use), all courts (basketball,
tennis, pickleball, handball and volleyball) and the dog park to further discourage gatherings of
any size and help prevent the spread of COVID-19.
On March 25, all City-owned beachfront parking lots and its two piers will close, in alignment with the most recent guidance from Gov. Gavin Newsom’s office to limit public gatherings and reduce the spread of COVID-19. The State has not yet announced a closure of Crystal Cove State Beach’s parking lot.
To further encourage social distancing and limit the spread of COVID-19, Newport Beach will close the Oceanfront Boardwalk on the Balboa Peninsula from the afternoon of Friday, March 27 through Monday morning, March 30. Beginning Friday, around noon, crews will begin installing barriers along the Boardwalk’s access points and posting temporary closure signs.
In addition, the Balboa Island Bayfront Walkway will become a “one-way” sidewalk beginning Friday, with signs directing pedestrians to walk in a single direction. This is intended to help walkers maintain at least six feet of space from other users along the narrow pathway. To reduce vehicle traffic congestion on the Island, the southbound Jamboree Road through lane at Bayside Drive will be closed.
