March 25, 2020 – Parks and Recreation outdoor facilities remain open to our community at this time based on recommendations from Governor Northam’s office. We continue to urge visitors to follow all state and federal recommendations concerning social distancing while visiting our parks and to make decisions based on what is best for the health and wellness of themselves, their families and our community. The Parks and Recreation Department advises the public to be mindful of recommendations set forth by the CDC when considering the use of playgrounds at this time. We will reassess as more information becomes available, and as we receive future guidance from Gov. Northam’s office and the Centers for Disease Control.
While our Parks and Recreation Department advises the public to be mindful of recommendations set forth by the CDC and social distancing recommendations, an optional alternative activity kids may enjoy is our Scavenger Hunt Sheet, an activity that is available, as of now, and may be downloaded here: [84KB] Scavenger Hunt Sheet
March 24, 2020 – As part of the City of Harrisonburg’s response to COVID-19, the Heritage Oaks Golf Course will close to the public starting Wednesday, March 25, at 5pm, along with all other municipal facilities and Harrisonburg Parks and Recreation indoor amenities for the time being. Our outdoor parks facilities will remain open at this time, though we urge visitors to follow all state and federal recommendations concerning social distancing while visiting our parks. We will reassess these closures as more information becomes available, and as we receive future guidance from Gov. Northam’s office and the Centers for Disease Control.
March 17, 2020 – The City of Harrisonburg will close the Cecil F. Gilkerson Activities Center, Westover Pool, the Price Rotary Senior Center and the Lucy F. Simms Education Center to the public, effective Tuesday, March 17. This is being done in conjunction with guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Virginia Department of Health regarding social distancing and limiting large groups.
All programming, classes and events scheduled to take place during this time have been postponed and registered participants will be notified. This closure does not impact outdoor amenities, though restrooms will not be available and we encourage all visitors to be mindful of health and wellness recommendations from the Virginia Department of Health.
