Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence, who tested positive for COVID-19 last week, will travel with the top-ranked Tigers for Saturday’s game at No. 4 Notre Dame.
Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said Wednesday Lawrence will serve as an unofficial assistant coach, helping freshman replacement D.J. Uiagalelei.
Lawrence is “incredibly knowledgeable,” Swinney said. “He’s been there. I think he’ll be able to bring a great presence. He’s got a great mind. He’s got great eyes. So he’s going to be Coach Lawrence.”

Lawrence tested positive for the coronavirus last Wednesday, learned of the result on Thursday. Uiagalelei stepped in and led Clemson to a 34-28 victory against Boston College. It was the Tigers’ biggest comeback — from 18 points behind — in Memorial Stadium history. Lawrence has been in a 10-day period of isolation but has been engaged in team activities and talking to the other quarterbacks by video.
“He’s been in the meetings. He’s been Zooming and all that stuff,” Swinney said. “He’s doing well. He’s anxious to get out. He gets back with us Thursday or Friday. So he’ll be with us. He’ll travel with us. He just can’t play because of the cardiac-back-to-play protocol (added to the 10-day period). There’s no way to get him through that in time for him to play in the game.”
Injured linebacker James Skalski also will make the trip for the highly anticipated matchup in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
“So we’ll have Coach Lawrence and Coach Skalski,” Swinney said. “I told them I was not going to take them unless they were going to be productive coaches for us. They’ll both take a lot of pride in that.”
