Summit recreation centers work to expand amenities as health regulations allow

FRISCO — The recreation centers in Silverthorne and Breckenridge are working to slowly roll out more offerings as resources and health regulations allow.

The Silverthorne Recreation Center has expanded its operating hours to 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. weekdays, adding an additional three hours open to the public. Before the change, the center was open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays and closed from 1-3 p.m. for cleaning. The center will no longer close in the afternoons.

Recreation Center Manager Steven Herrman said the center also has reopened some amenities, including some lockers and showers, and added household reservations for the pool or gymnasium. In these two areas, people from the same household can reserve up to four spots in the gym or five spots in the pool. Pickleball reservations for up to four people also are available.

Herrman said that while the center would like to open up some weekend hours for individual workouts and classes, there currently isn’t enough staffing to do so. However, the facility is still used on weekends for swim lessons and for middle school and high school club sports that typically would practice at the high school.

Herrman said the center is preparing for more demand as the weather changes and people move to indoor exercise. 

“Right now, our focus is going to be really dialing in our current operations, trying to educate on some of our policies and procedures a little bit more, and trying to work toward some weekend hours while balancing everything,” Herrman said.

The final fall program session for November and December opened for registration Monday, Oct. 19. The programs provide after-school activities like swim lessons, gymnastics, volleyball or outdoor activities. Herrman said mornings are busier and tend to fill up with 25 available reservations per 45-minute time slot. Evening hours are gaining more traction, and Herrman expects them to fill up when the snow starts to set in. He noted that capacities won’t be expanded unless the county’s COVID-19 dial moves in a positive direction. 

In an effort to step up sanitation measures, Herrman noted that a bipolar ionization system was installed in the facility’s heating, ventilation and air conditioning system at the beginning of the month. Currently, maintenance staff is testing the system for efficiency. 

“We’re definitely constantly exploring better ways to improve the safety of our indoor space so we can keep our doors open,” Herrman said. 

Farther south, the Breckenridge Recreation Center has a maximum use capacity of 50 people indoors and is open from 5:30-7 p.m. weekdays, which is a 90 minute extension from when the center originally reopened. Taapsee Pannu back to work mode after Maldives vacation

After holidaying in Maldives, actress Taapsee Pannu is happy to get back to work. On Sunday, Taapsee shared her excitement on resuming work post her exotic vacation, and also revealed that her coronavirus tests came out clear.

“Getting back to the grind with rejuvenated energy, exotic tan lines and most importantly covid negative report #WorkCalls #LightsCameraActionMode,” she wrote on Instagram.

Along with it, Taapsee uploaded a stunning picture of herself posing against the backdrop of the azure blue waters of the Indian Ocean.

The “Pink” actress travelled to Maldives with her sisters and rumoured boyfriend Mathias Boe, who is a badminton player.

How A Dog Hotel-Owner Is Making It Work After Losing 2/3 Of Her Customers

Bustle UK has switched up its regular money series How I Made It Work, to better reflect the uncertain financial times caused by the coronavirus pandemic. Instead of women who’ve achieved financial stability discussing the lessons they’ve learnt, each piece focuses on a woman who has had her financial situation transformed by the coronavirus outbreak in the UK. They’ll share what their new normal looks like and how (if at all) they’re making it work.

This time, HIMIW hears from Rebecca Linnell, owner of The Country Dog Hotel in Somerset, which offers canine friends a place to stay when their owners go on holiday. During lockdown Linnell was unable to accept business and now, with people going on fewer holidays or opting to travel within the U.K. and take their dogs with them, she had to shut down a recently opened new location and lost £10,000 in the process. However, she is hoping a new doggy spa service will help keep the hotel going.

What was your working life like before the coronavirus outbreak?

Very busy every day and always fully booked with our dog guests.

How has the coronavirus outbreak changed your working life?

It has changed it a lot. We have had to adapt and pivot our business to reflect the new regulations and the decrease in bookings.

We will be using Facebook and Instagram a lot in the next few months to introduce our new service and reach as many people as possible and a new market of people who may have not used the hotel but would like to use our spa facility. Communication, community, and being able to connect are going to be the most important part for our new service and our business in the coming months.

How has the coronavirus outbreak changed your financial situation?

It has had a massive impact. For example, this weekend we had 15 dogs booked in and now we have five. Even if people are travelling it is now generally within the UK and they are taking their dogs with them. We have had to close our hotel in Windsor (which we only opened in March) and we lost £10,000 doing this alone.

Has the government made financial support available to people in your industry or situation?

Yes, they have but [the money offered] hasn’t been close to what we have lost.

Do you feel government measures have been sufficient for people in your industry or situation?

Financially, no.

How are you managing any changes in your financial or professional circumstances?

We are using our own savings and we are pivoting the business and opening a dog spa as people still need to have their dogs washed, for example, even if they are not going away.

“End your ENDLESS VACATION” and get Congress back to work on funding PPP

What? And leave the safety of her twin $12,000 freezers? Donald Trump has signaled over the last twenty-four hours that if Nancy Pelosi wants to play hardball over an issue of replenishing the Paycheck Protection Program from afar, he’s willing to play hardball, too. For the second day in a row, Trump demanded that Pelosi and Chuck Schumer bring Congress back into session and start dealing with the COVID-19 crisis in person.

The “ENDLESS VACATION” is a nice touch, but I still prefer the Brave Sir Robin Congress:

The criticism of Pelosi is spot on, but slightly less so on Schumer. It would take Mitch McConnell to order the Senate back into full session, not Schumer, and thus far McConnell hasn’t done so. In large part that’s because Pelosi hasn’t acted either, but it’s still a fair criticism of both Pelosi and McConnell. In a national emergency — two of them, actually, public health and economic — Congress should be in session to act as quickly as possible to deal with the responses. That includes the Senate even if the House refuses to return. In fact, it’s a little puzzling that McConnell hasn’t recalled the Senate to demonstrate Pelosi’s fecklessness.

Pelosi’s weird demonstration of her ice-cream-hoarding prowess isn’t her only optics problem, either. When asked to explain why more money can’t get to the PPP right now, Pelosi offered a confused explanation comparing it to aid for hospitals — which hasn’t yet run out:

The solution to that should be a fresh look at the situation in Phase 4, but in the meantime, small businesses need access to the PPP right now to keep people on the payroll until they can begin operating again. Rather than focus on that acute need in a program Congress has already created, Democrats want to start larding it up with identity-politics pork while they believe they have some leverage to use:

In a joint statement Monday, Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Minority Leader Chuck Schumer called for “further changes” to the Paycheck Protection Program, plus “significantly increased” funding for disaster grants and loans, plus “additional support” for the food-stamp program, plus “adequate funding” for nationwide virus testing and personal protective equipment, plus “the collection and publication of demographic data” so that “we can accurately determine the level of impact on under-served communities and communities of color.”

Identity politics and the social pork barrel trump jobs and business solvency.

Democrats can make all this part of their election campaign, but the Paycheck Protection Program is out of funds

Programs | Summer Work Travel | Programs

Sponsors are required to:

  • Provide pre-arranged and fully-vetted employment to all participants who are not from a visa waiver country. Provide all participants, prior to entry:
    • A copy of the Department of State Summer Work Travel Program Brochure;
    • The Department of State’s toll-free emergency hotline telephone number;
    • The sponsor’s 24/7 immediate contact telephone number;
    • Information advising participants of their obligation to notify their sponsor when they arrive in the United States and to provide information of any change in jobs or residence; and
    • Information concerning any contractual obligations related to participants’ acceptance of paid employment in the United States, if pre-arranged.
  • Sponsors of participants who are nationals of Visa Waiver Program countries must:
    • Ensure that participants entering the United States without prearranged employment have sufficient financial resources to support themselves during their search for employment;
    • Provide such participants with information on how to seek employment and secure lodging in the United States before they depart their home countries; and
    • Provide participants with a job directory that includes at least as many job listings as the number of participants in their program who are entering the United States without prearranged employment.
  • Sponsors must undertake reasonable efforts to secure suitable employment for participants unable to find jobs on their own after one week;
  • Sponsors must inform program participants of Federal Minimum Wage requirements and ensure that, at a minimum, participants are compensated at the prevailing local wage, which must meet the higher of either the applicable state or the Federal minimum wage requirement, including payment for overtime in accordance with state-specific employment; and
  • Sponsors must maintain, at a minimum, a monthly schedule of personal contact with the program participants (in-person, by telephone or via-electronic mail), document such contact, and ensure that issues affecting the health, safety and welfare of participants are addressed immediately.

Program Exclusions

Sponsors must not place participants:

  • In positions that could bring notoriety or disrepute to the Exchange Visitor Program;
  • In sales positions that require participants to purchase inventory that they must sell in order to support themselves;
  • In domestic help positions in private homes (e.g., child care, elder care, gardener, chauffeur);
  • As pedicab or rolling chair drivers or operators;
  • As operators or drivers of vehicles or vessels for which drivers’ licenses are required regardless of whether they carry passengers or not;
  • In positions related to clinical care that involves patient contact;
  • In any position in the adult entertainment industry (including, but not limited to jobs with escort services, adult book/video stores, and strip clubs);
  • In positions requiring work hours that fall predominantly between 10:00 pm and 6:00 am;
  • In positions declared hazardous to youth by the Secretary of Labor at Subpart E of 29 CFR part 570;
  • In positions that require sustained physical contact with other people and/or adherence to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Universal Blood and Body Fluid Precautions guidelines (e.g., body piercing, tattooing, massage, manicure);
