With air travel demand plummeting this year, you might think airlines would try to make up some of that lost revenue by raising fares, but that’s not what happened – not in the second quarter, at least. And experts aren’t expecting holiday fares this year to be anywhere near as high as their 2019 levels. Read: With airfares plunging, will you go home for the holidays?

Nearly two weeks ago, Hawaii reopened to large numbers of mainland visitors when it relaxed its 14-day quarantine rule and replaced it with a negative COVID-19 test requirement. Since then, about 6,000-7,000 visitors per day have arrived, down from the normal 30,000 or so daily arrivals at this time of year. That bump in arrivals is great news for the economically strapped state — and for mainlanders hungry for a nice beach vacation. But for a small percentage of travelers, that nice vacation could turn into a nightmare. How? Read: What happens if you test positive for COVID-19 in Hawaii

A newly reported case in Texas could be the first instance of an airline passenger dying of COVID-19 on a flight. Although the incident happened in July, it was only this week that Dallas County officials confirmed the cause of death was COVID-19. Read: Airline passenger dies of COVID-19 on plane

Honolulu police issued warnings or citations to thousands of people in violation of coronavirus protocols since the state launched a pre-arrival testing program to reopen to tourists. The Honolulu Police Department said officers issued 4,500 warnings and 470 citations for not wearing masks or failing to social distance since the launch of the traveler testing program last Thursday. It looks like Boeing’s troubled 737 Max is almost back. American Airlines said this week that pending final recertification of the aircraft, it expects to put the plane back into active service before the end of the year and has scheduled it for a daily New York-Miami flight from Dec. 29 through Jan. 4. Technically, the 737 Max remains grounded by the Federal Aviation Administration — as it has been since March 2019 — although it has made a lot of progress to resolving the agency’s concerns. United Airlines to Test Health App Designed to Ease International Travel Restrictions

United Airlines Holdings (NASDAQ:UAL) on Wednesday will become the first U.S. airline to test a digital health project designed to standardize international COVID-19 screenings and allow for borders to reopen.

United and Hong Kong airline Cathay Pacific Airways are both testing a system set up by CommonPass, a nonprofit backed by the World Economic Forum that hopes to create a “COVID passport” of sorts that will ease concerns about the virus spreading via travel.

A United Airlines jet takes off.

Travelers on a United flight from London to Newark on Wednesday will upload COVID-19 test results into their smartphones and complete all health screening questionnaires required by the country of entry. The system verifies that the test results, or eventually vaccination records, come from a trusted source and that they satisfy the destination country’s requirements.

Users of the system will get a QR code that border officials can scan upon arrival.

The system isn’t an app itself, but rather the underlying technology that can be used in apps created by airlines, travel companies, and government agencies. The goal is to have an international standard trusted enough that it will allow countries to do away with the bans and quarantine procedures currently in place.

Other airlines are expected to trial the system in the months to come.

Airlines have struggled since the onset of the pandemic, and it will likely take years for lucrative international travel to return. Although there isn’t likely to be any immediate impact from initiatives like the CommonPass, any framework that helps governments feel more secure in lifting travel restrictions should help travel demand to return more quickly than it otherwise would.

United to JFK; Hawaii testing blossoms; another SFO lounge + more travel news

In this week’s TravelSkills on SFGATE newsletter…

In route news, it looks like SFO transcon flyers on United will get two NYC options next year; United customers to Hawaii get another testing location at SFO as the islands once again welcome tourists; Hawaii’s hotels and resorts are gradually reopening; American makes new concessions to AAdvantage elites; Southwest plans to start flying out of two big United hubs; UA will add more Mexico/Central American service this winter; Qantas will resume repatriation flights; JetBlue and Southwest will open up service to a popular Colorado ski resort; and American Express reopens its Centurion Lounge at SFO. Two new lounges at SFO? Yep. The old USO Center near the Delta Air Lines gates at San Francisco International Airport shut down for good in March during the onset of COVID-19 shelter-in-place orders. But the USO Center, SFO’s most exclusive lounge, is now back in business in a brand new location. See photos in this post for a closer look!) California home buyers are flocking to Hawaii and snapping up homes, sometimes sight unseen. Oakland Airport now has two COVID testing sites, and both are free. There’s one between terminals on airport grounds, and another on the north side of the airport, which you can access via car. This makes flying out of Oakland a much cheaper option for Hawaii-bound travelers hoping to avoid the $80-$250 fees at SFO.  Read: Oakland airport will offer free COVID-19 tests for Hawaii-bound travelers

When Singapore Airlines said seats on its superjumbo-turned-restaurant sold out in 30 minutes, one common question was: Who on Earth would want to do that? Plenty of people, it turns out. For every person who doesn’t relish flying, let alone schlepping to the airport and onto a parked plane for some reheated airline food, there’s another who can’t get enough of the aviation experience and is willing to shell out (big bucks) for it. Alaska Airlines and American have been moving closer together for months now, with increased code-sharing, plans by AA to shift some international flying on the West Coast from Los Angeles to Alaska’s Seattle hub and so on. They have also been promising that Alaska, which has never been part of a global alliance, will become a full member of American’s Oneworld

United Airlines adds 8 leisure routes to Latin America and Caribbean

  • United Airlines is growing its leisure route network as executives expect business travel to remain low until 2024.
  • Latin American and Caribbean countries with limited or no restrictions for entry by US citizens are the main focus of the expansion.
  • The new routes boost United’s presence in Mexico, Costa Rica, Belize, the Dominican Republic, and Honduras.
  • Visit Business Insider’s homepage for more stories.

United Airlines is further expanding its leisure route map this winter with a focus on Latin America and the Caribbean as demand shifts south of the border to the few countries welcoming Americans. The new leisure-focused routes make sense as the company’s CEO has said he doesn’t expect business travel to recover until 2024.

The new routes boost United’s presence in Mexico, Costa Rica, Belize, the Dominican Republic, and Honduras with expanded service from the airline’s hubs across the US from coast to coast. Both regions have been taking the lead in accepting American tourists in recent months as more flyers take to the skies.

Costa Rica, for example, is opening its borders to all Americans starting November 1 – after previously restricting entry for residents of high-risk states – with proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR test, according to the US Embassy in San Jose. Belize and Honduras have recently begun allowing all US citizens to enter but are similarly requiring negative tests to be presented for entry.

Mexico has remained open to Americans arriving via air throughout the summer and has not used negative tests as a requirement for entry. The Dominican Republic also does not require a negative test for entry.

The new routes allow for quicker journeys and allow for more non-stop itineraries for those seeking to head south for the winter. United is also increasing flights on existing routes to Latin America and the Caribbean.

Here’s where United Airlines is flying this winter.

United will begin flying between Cleveland, Ohio, and Cancun, Mexico on December 19 with year-round, Saturday-only service after having left the route in August 2019, according to Cirium route data. Competing with United on the route will be ultra-low-cost carriers Frontier Airlines and Spirit Airlines.

A former United hub that was re-acquired by the airline after a merger with Continental Airlines, Cleveland has seen reductions in service from United in recent years, with few routes beyond those to its other hubs. Once the route resumes, it will be United’s only international route from Cleveland.

United Airlines (UAL) to Add 8 New Routes for Winter Travel

As leisure-travel demand continues to improve, United Airlines Holdings, Inc. UAL plans to introduce eight new routes and increase services to 19 destinations (in Mexico, the Caribbean and Latin America) for the winter travel period.

As part of its expansion initiative, United Airlines aims to begin new non-stop services connecting Denver with Belize City, Belize and San Jose, Costa Rica from December. From Dec 19, United Airlines is going to launch new Saturday service between Los Angeles and San Jose, Costa Rica which expands to daily service on Jan 5, 2021. Moreover, the airline is also set to begin services connecting Los Angeles with San Pedro Sula, Honduras and Liberia, Costa Rica on Dec 17 and Jan 8, respectively. The flights will operate thrice a week.

Apart from launching these services, the carrier also plans to increase frequency for few routes. The airline plans to increase flights connecting Los Angeles with Guatemala City (10 times per week), Liberia, Costa Rica (three times) and San Salvador, El Salvador (11 times).  Some of the other routes where the carrier will expand services for winter travel are between Washington Dulles and Cancun; San Francisco and Cancun.

Through this move, United Airlines aims to generate revenues and boost flying opportunities. It is expected to boost the top line in the near term amid severe coronavirus-induced crisis.

United CEO: Business demand for air travel won’t return until 2024

United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby on Thursday said that he doesn’t expect the demand for business travel to return to pre-pandemic levels until 2024.

Kirby said in a holdings call that in his personal opinion, which he acknowledged is not the consensus generally, business travel will make a full comeback.

“We are, as you and me, we are social creatures and I think business demand is going to come back. I don’t think it’s coming back immediately. I think demand sort of starts to recover in earnest end of next year, beginning in 2022, and business demand getting back to normal is, I would guess, 2024. But I think it will come back to normal,” he said.

He remained hopeful that business travel can be a driving revenue stream for the airline in the future.

“Business travel is incredibly important to United. And it was our bread and butter before. I think it will be our bread and butter in the future. It’s going to be a few years before it comes back in earnest” he said.

United, which has been devastated by the coronavirus pandemic, lost $1.8 billion in the third quarter. Delta Air Lines reported earlier this week that it lost $5.4 billion in the third quarter.

Kirby also said, expressing hope that business travel will rebound, that it’s human nature to want to connect with others in person.

“I’ve been fond of saying the first time someone loses a sale to a competitor who showed up in person is the last time they try to make a sales call on Zoom,” he said.

Airlines for America, the industry group that represents the major U.S. airlines, also warned in September that the industry won’t fully rebound to pre-pandemic levels until 2024.

Kirby told employees on Oct. 1 that the company is moving forward with furloughing about 13,000 people but left the door open to reversing the process if Congress and the administration can reach a deal on a coronavirus relief package.

The airline industry has lobbied for a $25 billion injection from Congress to extend the Payroll Support Program. The program, which prohibited airlines from laying off employees until Oct. 1, allocated $25 billion in aid as part of the $2.2 trillion CARES Act passed in March.

Delta, United CEOs forecast the return of business travel

Delta Air Lines’ and United Airlines’ respective leadership are predicting very different timelines as to when exactly business travel’s full recovery from the coronavirus pandemic could happen.

DELTA POSTS $5.4B LOSS AS CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC BATTERS AIRLINE INDUSTRY

Delta Air Lines president Glen Hauenstein said the company believes the pandemic’s impact on business travel would be behind them in “two years or more.”

“With a slow and steady build in demand, we are restoring flying to meet our customers’ needs, while staying nimble with our capacity in light of COVID-19,” Hauenstein said in the company’s earnings release. “While it may be two years or more until we see a normalized revenue environment, by restoring customer confidence in travel and building customer loyalty now, we are creating the foundation for sustainable future revenue growth.”

Delta’s CEO Ed Bastian noted on the company’s conference call for its third quarter earnings that roughly 90% of its primary corporate customers have business travelers who are traveling in small numbers, but are “getting their own sense for what the new travel experiences is,” and that they are ultimately coming back to Delta with “really strong reviews of safety and confidence in restoring their travel spend.”

While video-conferencing platforms like Zoom and Google Meet have served as an alternative to traditional business travel during the pandemic, Bastian doesn’t forsee it outright replacing traditional business travel.

“I am of the view that it will have some impact, but it’s not going to be a substitute, it will be a complement to business travel,” Bastian said. “My sense is that we could be looking at anywhere from 10% to 20% reduction in the next couple of years when we get to that new normal of business travel.”

Bastian noted that in his more than 20-year career dealing with crises, business travel has always come back stronger than anticipated despite what critics say.

“I think we are going to see that same consumer behavior, it will undoubtedly be different, but I think it’s going to come stronger than most of the pundits’ view,” he said.

PUSH FOR MORE AIRLINE AID GAINS TRACTION AS INDUSTRY WARNS OF MORE JOB CUTS

United CEO Scott Kirby on the other hand, warned that while demand for corporate flights should start to recover by late 2021 or early 2022, a full return to normal levels for the airline’s business travel isn’t likely until 2024.

“I think it will come back to normal,” Kirby said on the earnings call. “I’ve been fond of saying the first time someone loses a sale to a competitor who showed up in person is the last time they try to make a sales call on Zoom.”

“Business travel is incredibly important, really important,” he added. “It was our bread and butter before I think it will be our bread and butter in the future.”

Still, Kirby is confident that United will make “a

All of the women I’ve spoken to have been amazingly patient, professional, and incredibly resourceful whenever I had a situation or question arise. Thank you for really caring for your clients and being so accommodating. It REALLY makes the whole process less of a headache. I can’t thank you all enough honestly, truly.

Not to mention, I was able to get my visa processed before my flight time when it wasn’t expected to! I owe that partly to such dedicated staff at Travisa NY.
