Corps places preventative measures in place for COVID-19 at Cape Cod Canal Project in Buzzards Bay

———————————————————–

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New England District has been responsible for the operations and maintenance of the Cape Cod Canal. With annual visitation exceeding three million, the Cape Cod Canal is one of the Corps busiest projects and serves as the gateway to historic Cape Cod.

Our primary mission is to provide safe navigation to the 14,000 commercial and recreational vessels that transit the 17.5 mile waterway each year. However the 1,000 acres of land that surrounds the canal provides diverse recreational opportunities such as hiking, fishing, biking, picnicking and ship watching.

Recreation Areas

Multiple Canal access points along both sides of the Canal have been developed into Recreation Areas equipped with restrooms, picnic areas and parking lots. View our Recreation Map to locate the various recreation areas along the Canal and what is offered at each.

Midway Recreation Area is a beautiful wooded area, ideal for families, offering individual and group picnic options with charcoal grills, volleyball and more. Midway has a large picnic pavilion with grills, tables, and a fireplace that can be reserved for group functions at no cost via a Special Facility Permit request; for more information email or call Park Ranger Ann LeBlanc 978-318-8531.

Biking and Walking

13.5 miles of paved service roads line the Cape Cod Canal. Open to the public, they are great for walking, biking and in-line skating.

Service roads which parallel both sides of the Canal are available for bicycling, jogging and walking. Each service road is approximately seven-miles long. Benches are placed along the service roads for the enjoyment of our visitors. While enjoying the Canal’s service roads remember, if you pack it in, please pack it out. All developed recreation areas that offer service road access are equipped with trash receptacles

BOOK DIRECT St John Vacation Rentals , St John Resorts, Hotels, B&Bs

We’re Exclusively St John Rentals

Our St John villa listings are created and managed by St John vacation rental owners and on-island management companies. They handle pricing, availability and bookings.

Communicate directly with St John Owners / Managers

Unlike other rental sites – we DO NOT stand between guests and owners/management. Contact information is clearly displayed on each property. We believe an open channel for communication is the best way to book your next vacation accommodations with confidence.

No “Guest Service Fees”

Unlike our friends at VRBO, HomeAway, Tripadvisor, AirBnB – we don’t charge you a fee to use or book on our platform! Never have … never will …

So how much does that save me? Let’s ask them …

TripAdvisor Vacation Rentals will charge the traveler a booking fee, which varies based on the rate of the rental. The booking fee ranges from 5% to 15% of the total booking value. The fee is automatically added to the guest’s invoice upon booking. “

VRBO / HomeAway – “The Guest Service Fee will never exceed 9% and also has a cap so that a traveler will never pay more than $599.”

AirBnB – “Guest service fees are typically 0-20%” with no cap. We’ve seen guest “service fees” reach into the thousands of dollars for a 1 week stay!!! More recently, AirBnB has “recommended” that owners build the guest fees into their own rates so you can’t see how much you’re paying!

Allatoona Lake

Situated on the Etowah River just 30 miles from Atlanta, Ga., the serene and peaceful surroundings of Allatoona Lake offer a respite from the rush of city living.  In fact, Allatoona Lake is one of the most frequently visited Corps of Engineers lakes in the nation with nearly 7 million visitors each year.

The Corps of Engineers, in conjunction with other public and private organizations, provides a wide spectrum of quality recreation opportunities that inject nearly $250 million into the regional economy each year. As metro Atlanta moves northwest, recreation usage of the lake is certain to increase.

Allatoona Lake is well equipped to meet the increased demand of the future with  589 campsites and 188 picnic sites. Additional facilities are found in nine city and county parks, one state park and eight commercial marinas.  Allatoona Lake has 270 miles of shoreline on which 978 Shoreline Use permits have been issued.

Authorized under the Flood Control Acts (FCAs) of Aug. 18, 1941, and Dec. 22, 1944 for the purposes of flood control and hydro-electric generation, Allatoona Lake is the oldest multipurpose project in the South Atlantic Division (SAD). The FCA of 1944 also authorized construction of recreation facilities.  Impoundment of the project began in December 1949 and the lake was in full operation by January 1950. The total cost of the Allatoona project for construction, land, clearing and relocation was $31.5 million.

Allatoona Lake is the first impoundment for water as it flows from the Blue Ridge Mountains and additional water for the project depends on rainfall. For an unparalleled  view of the dam, we recommend stopping by the Allatoona Lake Project Management Office and Visitor Center.  The Visitor Center also features displays and video exhibits on the local area’s history, ranging from the time of early Indians – to the gold mining and iron making days – to the present.

A Smart Plan to End the U.S. Lockdown Arrives Just in Time

(Bloomberg Opinion) — The U.S. is finally starting to take a sensible and proactive approach toward the Covid-19 pandemic. After a disastrous initial failure, coronavirus testing has now risen to levels similar to or higher than South Korea. Meanwhile, although he almost succumbed to the temptation to reopen the economy before shutdowns had time to quell the epidemic, President Donald Trump has wisely decided to recommend that social distancing continue through the end of April. And Congress, showing rare unanimity and boldness, passed a huge relief package that will sustain most households and many businesses throughout the next couple of months. But these are all simply holding actions, temporary measures to stop the virus from spreading out of control. Even the harshest lockdown will never eliminate the virus, and if restrictions are lifted without a regime in place to suppress new outbreaks, the epidemic will simply come roaring back. Meanwhile, every day the economy remains shutdown generates more losses and creates a larger backlog of un-serviced debt. That won’t work forever; an escape plan is urgently needed.A team of experts at the American Enterprise Institute has come up with exactly such a plan, and it looks like a good one. Those experts include Scott Gottlieb and Mark McClellan, both former commissioners of the Food and Drug Administration; Lauren Silvis, who previously held several high positions at the FDA; and Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security professors Caitlin Rivers and Crystal Watson. The first and most essential part of the AEI plan is to create a system that can suppress coronavirus outbreaks without lockdowns. This will require extensive testing; the plan’s authors estimate about 750,000 tests per week. Fortunately, that sort of number is now possible:Meanwhile, new rapid tests like the one from Abbott Laboratories will reduce turnaround times so that that cases can be identified in minutes instead of days. People who test positive can immediately isolate themselves. But testing and isolating isn’t enough to halt the virus because Covid-19 becomes contagious before many infected people start showing symptoms. To really halt the spread, therefore, public health authorities will need to use an approach called contact tracing. This means finding out who an infected person has had contact with in the past few days and notifying those people that they need to get tested even if  they don’t show symptoms.Traditionally, as in the fight against HIV/AIDS, contact tracing was done by hand. Coronavirus moves so quickly, however, that technological solutions may be needed to speed things up. Singapore, for example, has recently made its own contact-tracing app publicly available. This app relies on Bluetooth signals to tell who has been in close physical proximity to whom.Of course, that raises privacy concerns. That has tech leaders working on alternate solutions that do contact tracing while preserving anonymity. It’s possible that Apple and Google already have the data to do this. Meanwhile, any contact-tracing app will also have to quickly notify

What we are doing to keep the facility safe:

Custodial Staff are performing the following activities to help reduce possible exposure to flu, COVID-19, and other viruses on campus:

  • Wearing disposable gloves while engaged in cleaning services.
  • Disinfecting high-touch surfaces (e.g., tables, doorknobs, light switches, handrails, desks).
  • Transitioning from routine cleaning to disinfecting activities multiple times daily.
  • The cleaning of any visibly dirty surfaces will remain emphasized as part of the continued response to this emerging public health concern, followed by disinfection as a best practice measure for the prevention of COVID-19 and other viral respiratory illnesses.
  • Hand sanitizer dispensing units are located throughout the Rec Center.

Everyone can help take precautionary measures by following the everyday preventive actions for limiting the transmission of viral diseases recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC):

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • Avoid physical greetings.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
  • If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. Always wash hands with soap and water if hands are visibly dirty.
